DefiantFlower -> No one sells leather! (11/1/2007 2:33:24 PM)

Oh the frustration. So lately i've been in a creative funk and have been looking into making my own floggers. i've searched around for a leather artisan or vendor, but to no avail. Does anyone have information about people who sell leather in Florida or good places to buy it online?

Ohh! And if you have any fun little tid bits about making floggers, nifty tricks and such you have learned while making your own, i'd appreciate that as well. [:)]  Thanks! Hope everyone had an awesome Halloween!

G'afternoon all:

Sure they do. Ebay is your friend. Just a couple of quick searches. Make sure you check the sellers' stores for larger selections, better prices, colors, whatever.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=270153662286 (My personal choice of the two.)
My parameter for search was "Leather Hides". Over 200 results.

Tips: Learn how to make Turk's Head knots. They look spiffy around base and tip of handle. Uniformity is more aesthetic than sloppiness. Deer and lamb are thinner/softer while cowhide, bullhide, and buffalo hide are thicker/tougher. If you get stuck for how do make the floggers themselves? Cut the leather into really long strips. (36" +). Whatever thickness you want, remember though, thinner is stingier and thicker is thuddier. Loop them through a big key ring, halfway. Wrap a spare strip around many times neatly and tie off to create the handle. Viola! Instant flogger; less work/time, and the key ring becomes a nifty loop to hang the flogger from.

Hope that helps. From one crafter to another. I make other toys as well. Contact me off list if you desire more ideas/information.

Stay safe, place nice, & share your toys w/ others...

I feel for ya. I used to make toys myself when I was back in Denver... Jerry's Leathers on Broadway had everything you could possibly imagine... now that I'm in Arkansas, bupkiss!

Just to make all you shiny freaks drool, I figured I'd post something that I came across in an unrelated search. Reasonable price as well. http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Patent-Lambskin-Leather-OOOH-LA-LA_W0QQitemZ260176295620QQihZ016QQcategoryZ83938QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Enjoy.

Oooh lala! i did like the shiny one..and i'm not really a drooling shiny freak! And i absolutely love your signature quote, Bella...it's my life motto. *smiles*

i know, bipolarber...though i dare say you may have it a little worse than i do.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and sentiments! Would lambskin make a good flogger? i don't want it to be so soft that it would carry no sting...

Sartan's or Sartran's comes to mind. They're online. They got all kinds of hardware and tools as well.

I would Google for it, as it is accessible from the site where they sell the goods. There is a link, which takes you to the tools and materials site.

I suggest posting a wanted ad on craigslist if they have one in your area , Also ebay can be a great find . Tandy is fine  but they are nowhere near wholesale .I dont know your  toy making skill level  but if your just starting out  do not use the  big bucks hides til you get really good at turning out your  product line then expand into  the elks , deer , bison ,pig skin , lambs leathers  etc .Good luck and let us all know how  your work is  going  or at least me , lol . I am also in the hunt for more craftspeople &Artisans .

Just Leather in Maine is a great on-line leather supplier. They have a wide range of colors, weights and tempers and great pricing.  http://www.justleather.com/

Brettuns Village is another Maine supplier I've bought from. Not as wide a selection but excellent prices for full and half sides.
http://www.justleather.com/

Good luck,

A great resource! URL: http://www.saroftreve.com/hardware/index.htm

He also has a lot of good projects:

Definitely check it out. Note that his leather offerings are light (he suggests Tandy as well) but the hardware and projects are terrific and he is really nice about answering questions.

Leather?  Try finding Lorica!  Haha.  If anyone can help me there, I'd be most appreciative.

Hope the links others were able to give you help you out! :)

Most lambskin is too thin and too 'stretchy' for flogger use.

I like Tandy's...
But the thing that I love the MOST is my electric scissors from Lowe's...black and decker...cuts the leather like butter...nice even strips...and your hands don't get tired...I can get 3-4 floggers out of a charge...then they charge over night and ready the next day...

Worth their weight in gold I tell you...
