Let the community choose a name for you that fits.  Whoever said if you were around long enough...people will address you with the new name is correct.
Will you care if your children hear the new name?  Parents?  Etc?

*chuckle* When my two best friends and I get together, we've been called the Tri-Sarah-Tops. We've also been numbered, but different people number differently according to who they met first - so the point tends to be moot a good portion of the time.

Nice to meet yet another Sarah! *grin*

Hi,
(as an aside for no good reason other than to memorialize the moment - this is the first public post from my brand new laptop - gift from Sir for our anniversary this week!)

Sir and i were married a long time before we fell into the dark side, and when we began our explorations of "real Ds" we wanted a way to seperate the Ds us from the 'nilla us.  OK, yeah, we didn't have a clue at the time, i admit that!  Anyway, He gave it a lot of thought.  My birthstone and favorite stone is the opal.  I wear a huge fire opal ring all the time.  I love opals because they have such deep colors and they seem to be always moving inside, always changing and the sunlight brings out new hues constntly.  The only input i had in selecting a name was whether i might like a stone or a flower better and i said stone.  Argent is Latin and was used in heraldry for silver.  Neither Argent nor myself like gold very much and all my jewelry including weding bands are silver.  When you think about jewlery the setting, the metal part, holds and protects the stone - the silver holds and protects the opal.  So a lot of thought went into our "scene names".  We do not hide, we host meetings and parties in our home and many people know who we are.  OTOH, our family has heard Sir call me opal and when a grandum asked about it, i just said it was grandpas nickname for me and that was OK with them. They hear me say Sir or Daddy all the time, and no one says anything about that either.
Personally, I think selecting a name that you like and feels good and "fits" in this arena of your life can be fun and can just help us be who we are.  After all, our parents named us before they "knew" us and sometimes a birth name just doesn't fit right.

<grins> Love the Tri-Sarah-Tops! For us it was in order of joining the group and it started when I joined, with a comment by another member on Dr Suess's Cat in the Hat with Thing1 and Thing2 and thus we became Sarah1 and Sarah2. Now we have Honorary Sarahs 5-9, Mistress Sarah, and Master Sarah......we don't discriminate based on gender lmao, we just enjoy it.

That's amazing and fantastic. *grin* It's good to see people out and about having fun with names.

As for Argentopal - that story is awesome. I think that's a part of the reason some cultures give a childhood name, and then when the child has grown a new name is chosen - sometimes by the child, and sometimes by the community. To find something so fitting and meaningful, with a beautiful surface but a deep and special meaning...it's a joy to see.

I know it can be a private thing for some, but if anyone else is willing to share the story behind their name, I'd love to hear it. *grin*

Greetings Sarah....names are such a funny thing...I've always found using my given way was always what felt "right" to me...even though I never really cared for my name.  Anyway, I used to have a submissive...who choose the scene name "Eric" at first I called him Eric all the time..then as our relationship grew and we were boyfriend/girlfriend and going to family outtings and such...I would use his given name...it got so confusing for me....I always felt like I had two boyfriends.  LOL

Anyway...do what feels right for you.  I think that the community will accept it with ease...start by wearing a name tag (if the events you attend offer them) those who you are not yet aquainted with will go by your new name...and those who already know you as Sarah...just say...I prefer to now go by "XXXX".  I don't see it as being an issue with anyone.

You could always be...the woman formerly known as Sarah...if Prince could do it...you can too :-)

So...thanks Sweetie. Apparently I DIDN'T get enough sleep last night - or, I've been painting my nails too much. I typoed my own name.

*sigh* So much for ANY credibility I had. *goes to hide*

I find the problem with having a name in a foreign language is that most people can't pronounce it to my satisfaction.  Tigrita just sounds totally wrong to me if the r is not rolled properly.  I looooove this name, and it has lots of significance to me, but I usually go by my given name because I loooooove it too and it is very unique, actually that's the reason I don't use it here, because it would be easily recognizable to students I work with or googlable.

Anyway, you want to love the sound of it, not be constantly annoyed by poor pronunciation, or harping on people, training them to get it right.  But if it is easy to say, and you love it, or you don't mind the feeble attempts, go for it!

Good point, Tigrita. Anyone with any familiarity with Japanese at all shouldn't have issues, but for those with questions -

HEE-may

I had someone read it and say it sounded too much like hymen. *chuckle*

I've found that most people in the Scene take names from the foreign Celts and Britians.

Hi Sarah. ~smiling~

My name is "yaldah" (yel-dah) which is Hebrew for "girl". It never felt odd to me, always fit. If you have to use a scene name, go for one that doesn't make you feel self-conscious. Go for one that feels as normal as your own name (unless, of course, this is an official re-name by your Dom, in which case ... smile and love it).

Personaly I love the name Hime.. but then I have a fondness for Japanese names.

In my spiritual and close family I go by Kaiya Barasha.. They just call me Barasha for short. Kaiya means Forgiveness in Japanese. When I last tried to submit ( can we say that bombed? ) I was given the name Kaiya. I love that name. My sisters from that time who have also left.. but followed me and are still close ( comming for a visit next year yeah! ) also have Japanese given names and spiritual secondary names. It fit all of us very well. We go by a different code of ethics.. and the Japanese dress, and lifestyle suits us.

My name on here is my old SCA ( www.sca.org ) name. Gwynvyd is the idea of heaven where very enlightened beings go to be one again with God, or the creator. It is Welsh/Celtic in origin.

My plain ol regular name is Dawn. My father... also known as the German jack ass my mum married... wouldnt allow me to have a good and proper Indian name. Dawn was as close as she could get it.

Then we have my current SCA name... Giovanna Dragonetti

Name changes are not that scarey.. and you can keep it all seperate and in order.. just remember what you use when you do your bank sign in... that tends to be important. LOL

Good luck with what ever you chose.

And who are we today Cybil?

I so appreciate all the responses! Thanks for the stories, Gwyn - you always have something fun to say. *grin*

I'm very happy with the name my Sweetie chose for me - it fits me, and there's just so much to it. I am his Princess, and I'm glad to be called as such. Instead of calling me Mistress, as he does with some of his other play partners, I am Princess when we play. It gives me a special place without detriment to the other Dommes. Sarah and Hime both share the same meaning - Princess - which just completes the circle. *chuckle* I'm just royalty all 'round!

So...since I have such a terribly common given name (Sarah), I've been kicking around the idea of a scene name. It's been something I've pondered off and on for nearly a year, and it may not even end at being used for the scene.

So, an opinion poll: How acceptable is it to take names from other languages? Does it come across as contrived? Having fairly limited experience with scene names in general, I'm not sure where to go from here. I have one in mind - my Sweetie came up with it for me - but I want to think on it a bit more before I go public with it.

I don't know if I can answer your question regards foreign languages...however, I was considering "LookieNoNookie" as mine.

I would choose Hara for you....since it is your name backwards.....and whereas Sarah might be , in your words, common place, The Hara and what it can do baby certainly is rare.
