ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Gen. Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency in Pakistan on Saturday, suspending the constitution, replacing the chief justice before a crucial Supreme Court ruling on his future as president, and cutting communications in the capital. Paramilitary troops and police swarmed the capital.

Two questions - Is this going to give Bush an excuse for another  military attack?

Can Bush do this in 2008 to prevent elections in theUSA?

please forgive my ignorance - I'm still learning politics.  I am seeking to learn more - so ANY opinions on this topic help me learn and grow.

Musharraf was Son of a Bush's pro-consul in Pakistan but was increasingly compromised politically and militarily, especially by his ineffectiveness against Al Qaeda.

Bhutto was seen as a big boon for the West, so got the nod to go back in. She's much more able but it seems Musharraf - widely considered to be behind the assassination attempts on her - won't go quietly. He's taken all the TV stations off air, too. Highly unlikely the US would attack, since Pakistan is an allied state.

This is a rather solid response and no it does mean that Bush will do this when his term is up... It is a much different situation from the one we live in. For the most part.

This is normal for Pakistan, but it would be abnormal for the United States. And while many Liberals have been openly calling for the USA to attack Pakistan and Saudi Arabia for some time now (because they claim that's where al-Qaeda is) it isn't likely that the President of the United States will be attacking allied nations any time soon.

So, is he trying to set himself up as a dictator?  If he succeeds will that change his status as an American Ally?

in my opinion he is a dictator for all intents and purposes.  elections are rigged.  He originally took power in a military coup and we did not divorce him then so i dont see why we would now.
