Status: offline 		I am very interested in what books or writers have most inspired those in the bdsm lifestyle.
Two at the moment that spring to mind are (almost) anything by Jack Rinella, simply because of his fearless skill at being able to marry objective advice and subjective experience and the writing of Anais Nin, especially from a little book 'Under a glass bell'.
This opening to one of her stories had me open this thread:
From: The Child Born out of the Fog
Walking towards the river, walking through circles of children playing, walking under the arch of loitering men's eyes, walking into torn newspapers petaling upward, walking over sliced tin cans, walking past broken windows, (the stones ar lying on bare floors), walking over charred doorways..........
poetic masochism or what?

Which books or writers most inspire you in your lifestayle?

Status: offline 		Literature in general inspires me, but not necessarily with regard to BDSM. Literature led me to my chosen career which led me, albeit accidentally, to Aba (as well as to many many other wonderful things and amazing adventures).

Status: offline 		Pat Califia, both his fiction and non-fiction work... Carol Queen, Suzie Bright, Molly Devon. Funny how the best writers about BDSM in my opinion, are/were female...

But you can expand this beyond just the BDSM authors. Harlan Ellison is a big time favorite, and his writing taught me not to suffer fools lightly, and that "greatness" has nothing to do with the size of your house and what kind of car you drive. (It's in how much you stick up for what's right.) Ray Bradbury for his poetic prose that still sends a thrill right down my spine to my toes. Richard Matheson, just for the sheer ability to see the incredible always lurking just under the surface of real life. And of course all those authors that truly shaped America: Poe, Twain, Faulkner, Frost, Paine, Adams, Franklin... and so many others. Each and every one of them a rebel, an outsider, a deviant in his thoughts. (It's what made America great!)

And if you want to really go back, there's Ovid, and Shakespeare, and Dante,  yadda, yadda, yadda...

i am an avid reader...and will be looking at some of the books that the others are mentioning on this thread
i am currently reading an online, ongoing novel based upon BDSM called the Tales of MU
new chapters are written and posted every two days and i eagerly await each one.
curiously one of the things that first drew me to my Ma'am was some of the stories She sent me. Things She had written Herself..She is indeed a wonderful writer.

Status: offline 		I personally don't really seperate my lifestyle into bdsm and nilla, i just am and live it. Therefore i can't really say what writings inspire me bdsm wise. I know i love a poem  from the book 'the young submissive'. Its called 'two women, the submissive to the suffragette'.
Other than that everything i have read, and i read a lot inspires me.

I have to second this.

Also, I am an avid and voracious reader.
I've read most of Eckhart Tolle's books and found value in them for the time in which I read them.
Deepak Chopra
I even enjoy the bizarre stuff of Carlos Castaneda
Shirley MacLaine is a fun read.
Edgar Cayce gave me alot of insight.
Most of our past presidents that have written books or had books written about them.

Wish I could remember the author of a book I was reading this weekend. I am enjoying it a great deal.

Status: offline 		  Fiction--I like the ones set in England.   Lucy Golden for one.   Jack is good.   I like Screw the Roses mostly  because I had an opportunity to watch Phil scene with Molly and was able to purchase an autographed copy.   I was really greatful for this since Phil has now passed away.  
  I could probably list the books I disliked more than the ones I liked.   I should read the 'Story of O' again maybe I would enjoy it this time even though is has only been a few years since I read it.   'Story of M', total thumbs down---It should not even be in the BD/SM genre as far as I am concerned. I bought another one of her books on mistake, my cat had an accident on it and I was not disappointed.    The Maid for All Seasons series by Devlin O'Neil and his short stories, were okay---lots of spankings not really BD/SM and sort of reminded me of a chat room fantasy.   The adult woman sometimes acted rather babyish.   The Puppy Papers was okay but--I guess I was expecting something else.   I didn't really like the Beauty Series.  
     I can not say anything really inspires me in BD/SM.   If I had to pick someone who inspires me with their writing---it would have to be Alex Haley.

Status: offline 		To continue Bipolarber's train of thought, you can't discuss authors who stood alone and inspired without mentioning Heinlein. His Stranger in a Strange Land was practically the blue-print for the sexual revolution of the last 60's and early 70's. In addition, his books relating to the Long Family are also inspiring, leaving me, at least, to spend more than a few nights in torment. *chuckles* If you can find one, the unabridged version of Stranger is Immensely superior to the original, which had over 10, 000 words cut by the publishers when it was orginally released, I believe, in the early 60's. They figured, and perhaps rightly so considering the results, that the American public just wasn't ready for everything he had to say. It only after his unfortunate death that those words were restored and a new edition published by his widow and his long-time editor.

Also, since no one has mentioned her yet, you can't talk of erotic fiction and not make note of Anne Rice and her work under the pen name A. N. Roquelare. Both her Vampire series and the Beauty series are classics and shouldn't be missed.
