On the bright side no one can say this is a strictly American phenomenon anymore.

That sounds a lot worse than I hope you meant it... I really can't see any bright side of kids (and head mistress) being killed, be it in your country or someone else's. It is, sadly enough, not the first incident of this sort in Finland.

Dear God No I don't mean it. But I sometime deal with tragity through dry humor. Sorry if you took it that way. Peace...

Seeing the violence in the world makes me feel more as the peace activist for each day that passes, so obviously; Peace!
It really upsets me that young people are in such turmoil that they go out and kill... What is the world coming to? Have I been living too sheltered a life, or is there something fundamentally more wrong these days than 20 years ago?

The  media has been generating sales by trying to make isolated tragic instances look like widespread 'signs of the times' for many years.

Possibly, but I'm not so sure. In my little corner of the world it seems the climate on the streets has become so much harsher and that the violence has escalated. We have had two ministers assasinated during the last 20 years, as compared to none for at least 150 years before that. Finland (with a population of 5 million) has had two incidents of school shootings in the last couple of years. This kind of senseless violence was unheard of before that.

When I grew up the violence you were worried about was guys gathering together using those "nun chaccos" (or whatever those sticks connected with a piece of chain are called), now you worry about getting shot when you go out to a club at night.

Worrying... very disturbing, indeed

~Fast Reply~

Given that in the old days people found entertainment by watching people being hanged, battling to death against other people or beaten eaten... I honestly do not believe that things are somehow worse. What has changed is that there are where there are more people, there is a greater likihold that one will be mentally disturbed. People have always killed people, abused each other and raped each other. It isn't new, we just like to pretend that it didn't happen before.

As always... my .02

this girl was speculating with a friend earlier today that Earth is actually like the Australia of the galaxy, i.e. a dumping ground for all the galactic criminality. There really isn't "Senseless Violence" - it ALL makes sense :)

Actually I thought that Finland had a long epidemic of violent deaths of young people, at a higher rate than any other country at one point. They just weren't taking place in a manner that the media could profitably spin into public panic.

In the US, it was zoot suit wearing Hispanics, then switchblade wieldng motorcyclists, then angry young black men, then psycho Vietnam vets and postal workers, and now trench coat wearing high school loners, that the media shaped into bogeymen to inspire fear and increase revenue.

After a while imitation sets in, making the stereotype truer than when it began.

Actually it is a sign of the times, but you might not like it.

There are too many people, everywhere, and life has become cheap.

We've had violence and death in the media for a long time, but kids did not go out and do it. There was some sort of mental block, perhaps a veiled respect for the lives of others. Whatever it was, people knew the difference between fantasy and reality. They thought about the consequences of their actions, and surprisingly not just the consequences to themselves at times.

Yes it has changed. You can see it on the highway, at the surmarket, in the halls of an institution. Everybody thinks that they are the center of the universe, and when they find out they aren't, well, shit happens.

And the problem is not the young children, it is the old children.

I can tell that here this generality does not hold true for most, but people in general do not give a flying fuck about one another. I remember days when we would help a neighbor just because. I remember alot of good things. If you had a flat someone would pull over and lend a hand. Now you have to worry about getting robbed and raped. You need triple A and a cellphone.

As the world grows more and more overpopulated, we actually grow farther and farther apart. Some talk to thirteen thousand people on the internet, but are afraid to meet them.

In the last fifty years people have changed. And it is not for the better. And these people reproduce without ever getting to their inner self, understanding themself. And the situation propogates itself.

"Amma go shoot a bunch of moitherfuckers up at the school": What kind of shit is that ?

Look at the end result and try to think backwards. It is not because they didn't get enough candy on halloween when they were six. There is a bit more to it than that. People live in a fucking rapture now. Forever entertained, not in touch with reality. People, teems, kids, adults, anyone who has a grasp of reality does not want to hurt anyone who didn't hurt them. But everyone is not so lucky.

Shit, if I was pissed off at school, or got into a situation with some bullies or thugs I would just cut school, not burn the school. I might quit school, but I wouldn't shoot it up.

Incidents of all kinds are happening more simply because there are more people. But there is more to it than that. And I don't like it one bit.

I think it is more of a social issue. These kids that shoot up the schools all have something very clearly in common... they are deeply depressed. They are outcasts. They are bullied. It's all the same. The social situations in the schools is what has changed.

All these kids also show classic warning signs. This kid in Finland posted violent rants and videos on the internet. The Columbine boys also made videotapes of themselves shooting things in the woods. The shooter at Virginia Tech wrote very violent, graphic, and disturbing stories and poems. There is a psychological pattern here.

Once again an alienated youth having easy access to guns.

The only dangerous part of a gun is the nut (read: alienated youth) behind the trigger.

And what about the millions of other kids who are also depressed, alienated, etc. with equal access to guns and so forth who don't go on these shooting rampages?  Anybody paying attention to them?
