Can we get paid in Euros now???

This is nuts, how are we or our great-great grandkids going to pay this off?! Most of the bigger US companies are already foreign owned, the US is going down the toilet, fast. Can we FINALLY call for an impeachment hearing?!

In this next year Bush and big business will be ripping as much out of the country as they can.
You can count on having a reccession very soon now.
I hope they put it all in govt bonds and then the next president declares bankruptcy.

We were in good shape when Bill left!  I recall him specifying that we will use the SAME numbers per the debt.

I cant post the link here- but a medication I would like overseas has stated "due to the US dollar decline by 23% we are forced to raise our prices."  i never seen it quite so blunt.  [tho direct and to the point]

Thank GOD that the Democrat Congress has begun slashing spending to the bone. Congress holds the purse strings, you know...

This is rich.Maybe,.... a little context?

At least they`re spending the money,on America, and not Iraq.

A good analogy would be family with a drug addicted husband.

Like the US,there is income(taxes),a budget and "expenses".
The wife spends money on food, shelter, etc(the dems). The husband buys drugs, gets high, and wastes it all, including his life,(Iraq).

Though the two are spending money, one is clearly an ass-hole,and shouldn`t whine, when money get`s spent on the household.

Maybe, if the druggy husband(neo-cons), didn`t waste all that money, life and energy, there woudn`t be any money problems to begin with.

Try again. Your weird little stories are stupid, and way off topic.

Congress controls the purse strings - what is spent on Iraq, and everything else.

Period.

many are worried about the cost to heat their home. me included.  that will take from money i spend on home upgrades.  housing bubble or not= a nice safe decent place to live is a good thing.

While Congress has the purse strings, the executive branch as a whole is the one that makes things happen.  If we were to debate every penny spent at the federal level without leaving some spending authority within the White House, we'd be even more deadlocked then we already are.  Problem with war funding is that cutting budgets isn't the same as sending troops home.  It would translate to lower quality equiptment, empty gas tanks (wait, we'll just invade a rig or something), armorless Humvees and so on.

There is not yet a large enough body in the Congress to acknowledge: "hey, we've messed up these last few years, let's turn it around now, because we can."  I seriously hope 2008 will bring about the much needed change in strategies domestically and internationally, or I will be stuck in NJ when all the vacation hot spots use American dollars as toilet paper.  I liked the wife / druggy husband analogy, though I'd say instead of drugs, let's make it something more acceptable.  We in the U.S. treat war like a pasttime, only we pay attention to sports scores more than death tolls and troop movement.  It's not a drug addiction, that we can all universally say "bad, bad spender" but like the guy who buys season tickets to every game, fills his house with his team colors and bobble-heads, and wonders why his bills are so hard to pay.

This would tend to indicate in no uncertain terms that the bulk of the debt has been acquired during the Republican Controlled Congress.

Gas prices go up (natural, heating and for our cars), wages don't go up, people are getting laid off, and the holiday season is here; it's going to be one of those years where you have to pinch every penny until it melts.

I have an idea, lets keep the job HERE and stop spending so much on a war that few remember why we are fighting to begin with.. maybe things will start to make more sence.

the feds consider the official inflation rate at 2.1 % for 2007. [social security] i know it is higher then that. in ww2 there was rationing for the war effort. there was an extra tax. this time not so.  so what will we have? a devalued dollar. thats what it is. a devaluation. an old experiment to see if the US gets a cold if the world suffers on that. it fries my azz that all these recalls happen. a close friend has a dead cat over it. a food bank may close. agh

Actually, I don't think we were in that good a shape when Bill left. He was fiscally responsible, to be sure, having budget surpluses, but the national debt at that time was still sky high, thanks to the Regan and Bush I administrations. (Actually, we should just call it the Bush I administration. Ronnie was probably out of it with his alzheimers, so "Poppy" was most likely running the show, including the Iran/Contra crap while he was VP.)

Yeah, all this makes you wonder: how in the hell did the GOP get a rep for being "conservative" anyway? They talk about "tax and spend democrats"... well, at least they try to pay for their budgets! Republicans should be referred to as the "spend us into a deep, dark hole, and leave it for the next guy GOP."

Has it got to the point where we can shoot the neo-cons yet?

check out that first link...  this overwhelming debt shit all got out of hand starting with kennedy who wanted to prevent it by putting us back on silver, (of course he was killed before it happened), then look at the nice exponential debt after nixon took us off of the gold system and put us on funnny money system.

quite telling!

the plundering of American wealth!

nice reference sites btw

The Debt explosion began with Ronald Reagan and the cockeyed supply side economic theory of his political platform. Simply stated, RR legitimized the idea that Washington could slash taxes and hike spending at the same time with no negative consequences, because tax revenue would be made up for by the growing economy.

The real result has been generational warfare, aka, slushing off todays costs on tomorrow's young and unborn Americans.

To me, its unconscionable.

Clinton proved that the only way to reign in the debt was to increase taxes and control spending. He also proved that the US economy could boom under such a fiscal doctrine. Not one Republican in the house and senate voted for his program, and Al Gore cast the deciding vote to push it through. (At the time, Newt G. and Co. predicted an economic meltdown and zero economic growth.)

The Republicans are liars on this subject b/c they won't acknowledge that raising taxes can be a prudent policy. They are also liars because they consistently give lip service to lesser gov't while increasing federal spending.

If you have an influential party like the Republican one, who won't raise taxes or decrease spending --- all the while claiming supply side economics will make up the difference ----- its just a matter of time before we max out our credit line.

Nope, that analogy fits well. Both branches have a say and influence the budgets. And like a marriage, both are in the soup together. It`s the transparent attempt to place all the blame on the other spouse(the Dems)when you are the money wasting ,drug addicted husband(the neo-cons)doing all the damage, that`s so cowardly.

And again,at least their spending the money, here in the US of A.And not throwing it down a 400 billion dollar rat-hole, in Iraq
