bipolarber -> "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/9/2007 9:33:28 AM)

MSNBC on line is currently running an article on how the definition of Sex Addiction, and Porn Addiction is coming under fire. Seems many mental health professionals feel that the condition may not actually exist at all.

I am too busy pounding my pud to give a full rendering of  this at the present moment.

It may not exist, but what else are you gong to call people who spend so much time at it, that their ability to function normally suffers?

RumpusParable -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/9/2007 1:46:16 PM)

FR

I'd not thought much on it before, as it doesn't really apply to my life directly, but now on doing so I may agree with them.  On thought, it seems that these behaviors would tend to fall under behavioral disorders (specifically, being compulsion related) rather than addiction.

Too funny...

For those who are interested, here is the link to the article the OP is talking about:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21646830/
Addicted to love?
Debate simmers over whether sex addiction truly exists

And, for anyone wanting to take an on-line screening test for sex addiction, here's the link for that:  http://www.sexhelp.com/sast.cfm  Sexual Addiction Screening Test

BTW, this is one of the questions on that test:
39.  Have you regularly engaged in sadomasochistic behavior?

It turns out that i am a sexual addict, which i already knew but, now it's been confirmed.

Not me, I scored a "1" but I said no to #39.
They had a menu with "Sex Therapists" so they may be doing it to drum up business.
Unless she's going to sit on my face and fuck me silly I don't need a sex therapist.
Now there's the job for me!
"Popeye's Sex Therapy"
"Walk-ins welcome!"
MC, Visa, Am Ex, medicare, medicaid.
How long would it take me to get certified as a sex therapist?

Lordandmaster -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/9/2007 9:23:42 PM)

Of course it doesn't exist.  Well, it exists in one important sense: it's a condition that "mental-health professionals" invented in order to assert their professional authority over yet another sphere of human activity.  Does this really surprise anyone?  These are the people who gave us "sadism" and "masochism," remember?  Not to mention "perversion"...

TheHeretic -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/9/2007 9:34:42 PM)

Actually, LaM, it was the Marquise de Sade, who gave us "sadism," Venus in Furs brought us "masochism," and by all community standards, I am a pervert.

I reject the idea that we need to be 'cured,' but no, we aren't just like everybody else.

Lordandmaster -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/9/2007 9:41:30 PM)

Marquis, not Marquise.  And no, Sade never used the word "sadism," and Sacher-Masoch never used the word "masochism."  Psychiatrists invented those words afterwards.  There's a lot to read about this if you're truly interested.

TheHeretic -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/9/2007 10:05:23 PM)

Referring to forms of behavior by the name of a person who famously engaged in them/wrote about them is hardly the exclusive domain of psychiatry, LaM.  Take "Spoonerism's," for example.

Lordandmaster -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/10/2007 12:09:18 AM)

Heretic, I'm going to have to say this for your own good.

You don't know what I'm talking about.

You don't know how 19th-century psychiatrists used the terms "sadism" or "masochism," why and how their use of those terms differ from anything that Sade or Sacher-Masoch ever meant, and what any of this has to do with the professionalization of psychiatry.

As I said, there is a great deal to read about all this if you're interested.  Write to me offline and I can give you a terrific list of titles.

Or, if you'd rather just argue, then fuck it, I'm not interested.

TheHeretic -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/10/2007 7:37:48 AM)

Thanks for the offer, LaM, but I'm going to pass.  My shelves are already nearing overflow with stuff on topics I care about, that I haven't gotten to yet.  Arrogant psuedo-science (or histories of same), simply won't make the cut.

If you'd care to offer a synopsis, I'd be delighted to hear your thoughts on the subject.

bipolarber -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/10/2007 7:45:06 AM)

joy, thank you so much for posting the links! That was very helpful of you! Please show this to your Master. I'd like him to give you a nice pinch in a hard to reach place as a thank you, from me! LOL

Quite right... and of course since the Good Dr's themselves were part of the Moral Majority labeled them, as well as a miriad of other "Conditions" as Illnesses. It takes a few generations.. and people being diagnosed.

They finaly took being Gay off of the list of mental illness just a bit ago. I wonder what will be taken off or put on it next.

FangsNfeet -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/10/2007 10:32:17 AM)

Sex was a very big issue during the victorian period. Doctors wrote medical journals about how too much sex was bad for us. Some of these doctors told married couples that sex should happen once ever six months and not one day sooner. Other Doctors suggested that you should only have sex once every two years.

Is to much sex bad for us? Only when it keeps us from getting the nourishment and rest needed to have another go.

My understand is that terms "sadism" and "masochism" were first used by the psychiatrist Richard Freiherr von Kraft-Ebbing in his 19th century work Psychopathia Sexualis (1886).

I doubt that are too many titles on any list that challenge that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if all you want to do is assert and call disagreement with you an argument in which you're not interested ....

Well, rather than tell either of you to go spend money at the bookstore, I'll just refer you over to the General BDSM forum on this site for a quick refresher in how terms are easily co-opted for all sorts of purposes.  Or are you too "twue" for that? [:D]

If you have a more convenient and easy to use term than "sadist" for somebody who gets a hard-on putting clothespins on pussy-lips and knocking them off with a crop a bit later, or "masochist" for someone who gushes down the thighs when that is done to them, I'll be happy to consider adjusting my vocabulary.

Not interested in letting semantics and 19th century definitions screw up such a gay weekend.

RumpusParable -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/10/2007 2:21:38 PM)

From the survey/test:

"Did your parents have trouble with sexual behavior?  y/n"

What exactly are they asking here and how I am supposed to answer?  Lol, I've no clue.

Heck, just for starters I have to ask "with mine or theirs?".

And then there's the other end of the spectrum, assuming that the question means "Did your parents have any issue with your expression of sexuality or your known sexual choices?"... and then we get into how would you answer that?

RumpusParable -> RE: "Sex Addiction" in question again (11/10/2007 2:31:14 PM)

Okay, I'm to #8 now and these are so wide open that they cover anything and everything.

"Has anyone been hurt emotionally because of your sexual behavior?"

The answer to this could be "yes" meaning something like "one lover was quite upset when i stopped having sex with them" or "mom was very unhappy i wasn't a virgin until marriage/didn't become a nun"...

or it could be "yes" meaning something like "well,  my last girlfriend was mad and felt I cheated on her when she caught me with the dog".

These questions feel like the Scientology questionairre.
