i have come to realise that i may not really understand what P/pl mean when T/they talk about humiliation in a D/s context. So i'm hopeful the other members can shed some light.

Is there a difference between public and private humiliation?

Does humiliation include talking dirty during sex or play?

Does humiliation mean the same thing as degradation?

What is the purpose of humiliation? Is it a punishment?

These are probably answers that will differ from person to person.

The difference b/t public and private humiliation is just that--public and private. I, personally, avoid any public humiliation that would involve any "vanilla" folk in my "play"--they shouldn't be forced to witness something that they aren't into.

Humiliation certainly CAN include talking dirty during sex or play, if that's what the person being humiliated finds humiliating--I would imagine it could include either the "Top" verbally abusing the sub, or even something as simple as the sub being required to beg to cum.

I would define degredation as a more severe form of humiliation, which might include something I found "disgusting" but that could just be me.

The purpose of humiliation is completely in the mind of the participants. If the sub enjoys humiliation play, it would be a reward. If not, requiring them to wear diapers all day (or whatever form of humiliation one used) would be a punishment.

Dunno if that helps at all, but those are my thoughts on your questions!

Yes. Public humiliation involves several others....possibly in a bar or a restaurant...private humiliation is when your cat shits in your shoes and you're late for the office.

It's actually a replacement for the current crop of TV shows that are being affected negatively by the writers strike.

The way I see humiliation is to turn my head off and just act on a command. I dissect thoughts and actions and emotions and motives way too much - I like the simplicity of being objectified.

Humiliation / degredation can be used as punishment or it can be a kink, or just something people enjoy. It can be talking dirty during sex, if it pushes the sub's humiliation buttons, or it can be something larger, like wearing an adult diaper at a public / social event and being commanded to drink large quanitities of water and only pee in the diaper. The play can absolutely be public, and as you can see in the example, it doesn't have to be sexual.

I think so. I can remember once being told to wear this dress, with no underclothes at all... the dress was so short that nothing was covered... it just barely reached my hips...
He knew that I had an aversion to showing my body in public; this was his way of getting me over that.

Privatly, there were times he would make me stand in front of a mirror and just look at my body... something that I hated doing... very embarassing.

Personally, I don't think of the two as the same. To me, degradation tears down a persons self-esteem in a negative way; humilation on the other hand, can be used in a positive way.

Public humilation doesn't have to be noticed (or, if noticed, understood) by the public in order to be humiliating. That tail you're sporting looks cute poking out of your skirt... only you and your Master know it's actually a butt-plug. But then, he could order you to tell anyone who asks... There are degrees, and it's all a game of pushing your limits and seeing how much of life you can grab onto if you're pushed into it. The feeling of victory and euphoria when you realize it's all over and you survived intact--it's the same reason people climb mountains and jump out of planes. That, plus it can make subsequent rounds of sex *very* intense. Enjoy.
