pinksugarsub -> A Question about Menopause (11/10/2007 4:16:30 PM)

For the past couple of weeks i have felt as if i have a low-grade vaginal infection.  Nothing like the fiery pits of hell i had when younger.  i'm pretty sure i'm going through menopause, and don't want to make a MD appt.

So can anyone tell me whether this is normal? And what might relieve the discomfort?

TY,

There are over the counter yeast infection meds, why not try one? But no, this isn't something menopausal in my experience.

Menopausal women get vaginal infections, too.  You don't suddenly disregard them just because you've started menopause.  Why not just make an appointment?

It's it's annoying, yet not extremely itchy, it could be a bacterial infection, not yeast.  I would go and have the doctor take a swab.  If it's yeast you can get the diflucan pill and not have to mess with the suppositories.  If it's bacterial you'll need some other medication for it.  Also, if you are menopausal, you may be having discomfort from vaginal dryness.

If i were you, i would see my doctor about it. Never hurts to get a check up if you are concerned about it.

don't they have those otc tests now to tell you if it's yeast?  it's fairly new so I don't know if they are using So Cal as a test market, but if not...take a stroll down the feminine hygeine aisle...

According to an ob/gyn the change in hormone levels during menopause can cause vaginal irritation and discharge, but Y/you should still go to Y/your doctor and get checked to make sure it isn't some type of infection. Don't just self-prescribe yeast infection medicine even if it is available over the counter before Y/you're sure what is going on!

Here's the screening kit you can order:  http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=346534
OTC treatments are available at pharmacies.

And just my two cents, but entering menopause is an excellent time to go see your MD and make sure that any other symptoms aren't something else and confirm that they truly are menopause.
