Hunting Season - 11/10/2007 4:49:27 PM

Status: offline 		Deer hunting seson opens soon around the areas of the country where it is permitted.  i have always been a bunny hugger and thought hunters were somewhat cruel.
 
Friday, a 3 year old was killed here when the vehicle he was in collided with a deer in the road.  They may be overpopulated here; i don't know.  The child's death makes me very sad.
 
What is Y/your opinion of hunting?

Status: offline 		i'd rather a hunter kill them then have them splattered all over the highways. So far i have seen two deer remnants splattered, the blood is still quite visible as well as little pieces of flesh   i have almost hit a few myself - good thing i have fast reflexes, older people maybe aren't so quick and their eyes sight not as good, especially at night.   i feel terriby sorry for them - their glowing eyes in the trees next to the side of the road.  i also heard if they aren't hunted many will die of starvation. i am not into hunting, so i have no idea of the validity of any of this.  Could be what hunters say to validate what they do for all i know.  It seems pointless and cruel to me to hunt just for the sport of it.  The ones i know who do hunt actually eat the deer meat.  i have tried it and don't like it at all .

If i ever cannot avoid hitting a deer, do i brake or not?  i have heard some say braking hard will land the deer through your windshield. Others say differently. i think it's a matter of time before i probably hit one myself.  i did hit one, but it was dead laying in the road already. By the time i saw it, i had seconds to either swerve or run over it. i didn't want to topple my caravan so i gripped the wheel and ran it over - had i been in my other vehicle i would have had major repairs to make.  This is different than hitting one standing up though.

Status: offline 		I live in Iowa. We have so many deer that people come here from other states to hunt. I drive 100 miles a day, 5 days a week. Every day, especially right now ( they are in rut and the farmers are harvesting ) with the deer moving around so much, I see at least 2 new dead deer as road kill. It can quickly total a car.

The cities here have a huge problem. Large herds of deer living in the city limits, damaging and sometimes destroying property. Many are now doing controlled sniper hunts to cut the numbers.

I don't like to hunt anymore. I did it years ago due to economics. Now, I don't have to and would rather shoot them with my camera. Yet I acknowledge that it is necessary and I do enjoy the occasional gift of venison treats from friends.

Status: offline 		Deer hunting is reasonable as they do get overpopulated can run out of food in an area. Most of the large preditors that kept the deer population down such as mountain lions and wolves are gone from much of the deer habitat.

Coyotes and feral hogs need to be severely controlled. The coyote was once just native to Mexico, south Texas, and other parts of the Southwest US. Because of the elimination of mountain lions in south Texas in the 1920's and '30's, the coyote has been able to spread all the way to the north east. Mountain lions hunt and kill all coyotes and competing preditors in their territory which ranges 20 miles. Coyotes kill all of the small animals and ground nesting birds in an area and they kill more livestock than mountain lions ever did. Coyotes also kill cats and dogs in urban areas.
Ferel hogs destroy crops and damage the landscape. They compete with deer, birds, and other animals for food and they chase other animals out of the territory. Hogs are also dangerous on the highway because they are often 350lbs or more and can do a lot of damage. Removing coyotes and hogs from a large part of the US would restore the natural balance that existed over 100 years ago.
Over hunting can be a problem. Some game animals require a minimun number in an area to have a sustainable population. Wild turkeys are a good example. When the turkey population gets below a certain number, say 50 or so, they are no longer able to replace themselves. Turkeys suffer a lot of losses during the nesting season due to predation from raccoons, bobcats, and coyotes. Some areas host turkeys better than others. Wild turkeys were almost hunted off in Texas and there are still some areas without them.
Non-native species such as fire ants also kill native game. Texas is suffering from a 3% population loss each year of Bobwhite quail. Ringneck pheasants and partridges are also not sustainable here because of fire ants.

Managing deer is necessary to prevent starvation and disease. If we don't control them then nature may take its course and a larger number could be wiped out. Bumper deer is not bad when properly brined and prepared.

Status: offline 		It is also rutting season, that will stir up deer enough to make them run on to the roads.  Don't blame all of it on the hunters.

One of my neighbors totalled one car and damaged another the very next day.
I'd be driving at night and they'd be running across the road ahead of me. Many times I had to stop short with them in the road.
I really slowed down, driving under the speed limit.
One time I was doing about 35 in a 50 and this beer truck passed me.
I said to the ex, "I'll let this guy run interference."
Not even a minute later, BOOM, assholes and antlers all over the road!
He got two of them and caved in the front of his grill and bumper.
Driving at night during hunting season in New Hampshire is just asking for trouble.

Status: offline 		If you eat meat from a restaurant or buy it from a supermarket, the cruelty you cause by supporting factory farming is FAR worse than anything the drunkest, most lowbrow and cruel hunter ever did to a deer.  That goes for chickens, where most often the baby male chicks are sent down a conveyor belt to a dumpster to die, or cows that are slaughtered while still half alive, or worse yet, factory farmed pigs.

Hunting is not only reasonable, it is an absolute necessity. Unfortunately though, it most likely won't be long before this thread will turn into an ugly debate by people who claim to be animal lovers but really don't have a clue.

I was thinking the same thing.  This is going to go the way of 1) abortion and 2) political threads.  Not pretty, yet sometimes amusing.

That`s certainly a tragedy.They seem to be getting worse,throwing themselves in front of cars and all.I`ve hit a few myself.

There are quite a few folks killed in hunting accidents every year,also.

Hunting as in the sport or hunting as in survival?

I could care less for hunting as a sport. Antlers do not hang in my house and I eat the fish that I keep. I catch and kill as means for survival. I am a carnivor and need meat to better my survival and passing of my genes down generations. Nature has made me what I am and I'm doing my part by killing and eating what I need.

The whole thing is not as simple as hunting vs. Bambie hugging.

There are schools of thought, that believe that as deer(or any animal)are killed/die,that leaves an "ecological slot" open for another deer.

In other words,it`s the food supply,that controls the numbers.In rough terms,when we shoot one,that only leaves more food to be eaten by another dear,which are being put ,"on-line" by the tens of thousands every year as new-borns.If true,we could shoot them by the thousands and that wouldn`t change the road danger dilemma.

Has anyone heard about chemo-technology that makes deer  infertile?Food left out, that when eaten will keep the females from conceiving.

That could be much more affective.

Status: offline 		I'm two hours from Manhattan, hardly the most rural of areas. But the major cause of death here is from car/deer meets. I don't know anyone who hasn't had a major deer accident. One of the things that keeps our town police busy is searching the woods for wounded deer after a car accident.

Yes, I'm pro hunting. Around here, you can get two doe permits per season; bow, rifle, black powder. Plus one buck over four points per. That means nine deer possible. Although the odds of getting a deer with black powder seems to be slim and none.

A State Trooper who used to hunt my land said that most deaths occur because people swerve. You swerve, you wind up in a ditch or wrapped around a telephone pole. You hit it straight and although the car will need several thousands of work, the deer will slide up and over your car, and not going through the windshield. Never swerve for animals on the road. Ever. Brake yes, swerve and lose control, no.
