Sadist- receives pleasure from pain in others, specially if caused by them

Top- someone who enjoys taking the general active/in control mode during particular defined periods over another

They really have nothing to do with eachother necessarily at all.

Top.... a person that gives sensations to another.

Sadist.. a person that enjoys inflicting pain to another

A sadist is a Top... but not all Tops will be Sadists.

Sadist here... I don't always let the sadistic part out when I top. 
I'm not always topping when I'm being sadistic....

All sadists are tops, because they use the implements (hands, floggers, canes, paddles etc).

But not all tops are sadists. There are tops who prefer giving pleasure, tops who prefer to tie people up, etc.

A sadist is someone who enjoys infliction pain, specifically for sexual gratification. A Top is someone who does it for any purpose, including this one. I know many service Top slaves, for instance, who do it because they're ordered to.

sadist hurt and gave pain to an extreme they enjoy hurting and it is scary how much they can and will hurt to get pleasure. now a top is someone who will control a submissive in different ways with holding things control of orgasm a spam king or a whip but your different so much so i would not go to a sadist if i were paid sorry i do not mean to be cruel but you scary

Being a sadist refers to separate categories of sadism, the sexual BDSM type and the clinical “pulled wings off flies” as boy type. 

Sexual sadism: For BDSM it refers to sexual gratification from inflicting pain or suffering upon another person.  I have met sadistic switches and subs in my life so I do not see that it is a mandatory association between sexual sadism and Topping.   
 
Sadistic personality disorder: Enjoys inflicting pain; this may or may not be sexual in nature.  This disorder is a pattern of cruel, demeaning, and aggressive behavior, beginning by early adulthood.  Sadistic personality disorder has many strong associations with dominance and I can see where that type of sadist must be a Top. 
 
Note: Krafft-Ebing says there is a natural tendency in men towards sexual sadism and a natural tendency of women towards sexual masochism.  At present, there is a push in the medical community to remove sadism (and masochism) from the paraphilia list in the next DSM.

I have read some of his stuff on "Masterism"and enjoy his views .  The sadism info I posted is straight from the DSM.. I had researched it a bit as I wanted to make a complete list of paraphilias for my personal web site.
