Hello all! I’m considering whether or not to go on the drug Accutane for my acne. The drug, also known as isotretinoin, is a very high dosage of vitamin A and you can only legally be on it for 5 months in the US. While it is almost guaranteed to clear up my skin, it does have several nasty side effects including easy bruising and bleeding, bone pain and fracture, and decreased ability to heal physical damage. I was wondering if anyone else has been on the drug and how it affected your play?

Humbly,

greystreet

It very much depends on the dosage rate you're given. The minimum is 10 mg/day, the maximum is usually 40 mg/day, although some Docs have gone higher. The US tends to follow the high dose for a shorter period route, while the Europeans go with a lower dose for a longer period - in an attempt to minimise side effects. The ultimate effect is the same for both routes, as it depends on the total cumulative dose that you receive. Roche have very strict guidelines on administration of the drug - especially with females of child bearing age, as it is known to cause severe birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Stay out of the sun, don't take Vitamin supplements containing vitamin A and so on and so forth.

Most patients I've known, who were young males and taking it at the 40mg/day route only really complained of the dry skin and severe lip chapping that can occur. (A pot of vaseline will become your new best buddy). One of them did have an acute sudden raise in their triglyceride levels, but after staying off the drug for a month (TG levels returned to normal in that time) and then resuming at a lower dose, he was fine. As long as you follow the dietary guidelines to the letter (low fat diet, absolutely NO alcohol etc) and have your blood checked on at least a monthly basis then you should be OK. Talk to your doctor about taking at a lower dose if you have concerns about the other possible side effects. Note: it is not guaranteed to clear up your skin. In most individuals it has a significant and dramatic, long-lasting effect, true, but some people require repeat doses of it, and their acne has been known to recur. And yes, I have taken it myself, with mixed results.

Good luck with it. And of course, talk to your doctor at every opportunity, as nothing I've said here is meant to replace their advice!

This will probably be moved to the Health and Safety thread.....

I urge you to do research on accutane.  It is a wonder drug for acne, but not without side-effects and controversy.  If you are prone to depression, tread carefully.  Also, as a female, be aware that it is teratagenic and you will have to be on birth control and provide negative pregnancy tests.  Also, it is very drying to everything, including your skin and lips.  But like I said, it does work well for many.  My sons were on it and had good results.  One could not stand the drying effects of it and he's now on proactive.

I was on Accutane the summer between 7th and 8th grade. I remember  having to have montly blood tests, but do not remember what they were checking for.
I also remember not being able to be in direct sunlight or have much physical activity (I was excused from PE for the entire cycle of Accutane). Like the other posters said, it is very drying. My lips were severely chapped and peeled half-way down my chin (GROSS!!!) and my eyes were constantly dry as well. I was cautioned not to become pregnant due to possible birth defects.
Overall, though, I was very pleased with my results. The cystic acne that I had went away never to come back. I was lucky and did not have any scarring from the acne; maybe we caught it early enough.
Good luck!

Also think about looking in to seeing a naturpath before taking such a nasty drug. There are a lot of things that naturpaths can try to clear it up first before putting something that had major side effects in to your body.

Hello everyone,

I'm greystreet's Dom.  I hope this post focuses the replies to the question that she and I are concerned about.  We are well aware of the side effects of Accutane.  The question that we are looking to answer, is more along the lines of how bad will she bruise?  Is it ok for me to play with her?  I know everyone will react differently, so this isn't a very fair question, but have any subs/bottoms/slaves/whatever, who have been on Accutane, noticed an increased bruising due to the medication?  Has anyone noticed scarring from injuries that would not have scarred otherwise?  This is the crux of the matter, so if anyone has been in this situation, please let us know what your experiences where.

Thank you,

Mike
