Found this if its any help, its off this site:  http://www.softcup.com/product/frequently_asked_questions.php#a13

You may want to start by learning more about your own vaginal anatomy. Begin by inserting your finger just an inch or so into your vaginal opening. Then slide your finger further in until you can feel your cervix at the end of your vagina. (Your cervix is the bottom part of your uterus. It is knob-shaped and about 2 or 3 inches in diameter.)
Before inserting the INSTEAD® Softcup®, wash your hands. The first time you insert the INSTEAD® Softcup®, we recommend squatting or sitting on the toilet with your knees apart. When you are in this position, your vaginal canal is horizontal, sloping slightly downward. To insert the INSTEAD® Softcup® properly, pick it up and hold it so that the collection reservoir area hangs down from the bottom of the rim. Then, squeeze the opposite sides of the rim together. You will note that when squeezed for insertion, the INSTEAD® Softcup® is about the same size as a tampon. Gently slide the Cup down toward your tailbone, for insertion. The INSTEAD® Softcup® will slide into place under the cervix and behind the pubic bone and will come to rest naturally in the anatomical space just below the cervix. You r body will naturally stop the INSTEAD® Softcup®. Once the Cup is in place insert your finger and feel for the bottom of the collection Cup. You should feel your cervix inside the cup, which means that it is properly positioned. Do not tilt the inside edge of the cup upward as you insert it, because it will bunch up in front of the cervix instead of slipping under and into place behind the cervix where it should be. If that happens, just pull the cup back slightly toward the opening of the vagina, then lift up on the outside edge and try again. When the INSTEAD® Softcup® is inserted properly, you shouldn't feel it. If you feel something in the vaginal canal, the Cup is probably not far enough inside you. Just remove it and try again. Remember, it will be much easier if you are relaxed. If you are still unable to insert it until it slides comfortably into place, the Cup may be too large for you. This may be true for a small percentage of women. If you want to double check on the fit and/or size of the Softcup®, take one with you the next time you visit your Doctor or Nurse Practitioner. S/he can check it for you.
If you are still having trouble inserting the INSTEAD® Softcup®, here are a few tips. First of all, we recommend that you try inserting the INSTEAD® Softcup® for the first time on a light flow day or even when you are not having your period, preferably in the privacy of your own home and when you have plenty of time. That way you'll be more relaxed.

I am trying to remember, its been a few years since I used Instead. I don't believe you insert them as high as your cervix but rather more towards the opening and just high enough that you don't feel yourself sitting on one. They are supposed to mold to the dimensions of your inner self and you're not supposed to change them very often--every 24 hrs? The technique of using them takes practice and patience unlike the tampons "insert and go" technique. If you get too frustrated, make yourself some comfortable pads out of flannel, old diapers or even tea towels like our grandmothers did.

Best wishes

The softcup rocks, it is inserted just like a diaphragm. The advantage to using it, and a diaphragm, is you can always have sex, even on your period and no one will ever know.

Takes practice to get it right, but when you get, you will really love it more than a tampon, believe me.

hobbit, it has nothing to do with your finger size. :). You are perhaps nervous? I remember the first time I tried using a tampon. I was 14 and my best girlfriend and I waited till no one was home. She was in one bathroom, I in the other and we kept yelling and laughing about "how do you get this IN?"

all of a sudden, we heard giggling. turns out, my younger brother and his little friends snuck in and were outside the bathroom door cracking up! we screamed at them and ran them off, LOL

when we finally calmed down, we both were successful. and yes, girlfriends have been known to help each other with girlie bit problems. :) Maybe try a little KY to help?

*smiles wistfully*

i had a very dear friend who had lost some hand mobility after carpal tunnel release.  she was having a very bad month, and literally crying because she couldnt change her tampon.  i very matter-of-factly pulled her string, got her cleaned up, and got her a different brand that the applicators were easier for her to handle.

kitten, sighing.

*hug*  love is love, whether its romantic, familial, or really good friends.  i miss her terribly.  she died about 2 months after that incident.  funny thing is, we had been giggling about it the day before she passed.  :)

bittersweet memories.
