MSNBC online is currently running a story of the congressional estimate of overall costs of the Iraq/Afghanastan wars. This time including hidden costs like the high price at the pump, interest on our borrowed money from China to pay for operations there, and the like. Currently, the estimate runs $20,000 + per American family of four. If we continue until 2017, we can easily look at doubling that.

Gosh, and we were all so happy to get our $300 or so back from his tax cut...

Afganistan aside, I really don't understand the point of the other war.

What happens to families with incomes below $20,000? We are so preocuppied with i don't know what that we'll bankrupt the middle class in this country.

You people don't understand. These are 2007 dollars. In 2017, $20,000 in 2007 dollars will be a cup of coffee. Seems like a cheap price to pay for democracy in the Middle East.

Or, it could just be a huge well that we keep funneling money and young people's lives into, and never see any results from... Considering that even the Iraqi governing body is saying that things are broken beyond repair, that seems very likely indeed.

All this whining. Now how many of you are voting for (and working for or donating to) one of the three presidential candidates who have promised to withdraw and end the war? If you are not planning to do so then you have only yourselves to blame.

During the last Presidential election, Democrats worked hard to keep the one and only anti-war candidate - Ralph Nader, off of the ballots in several states.

I saw a break down of these costs by an independent economist on the BBC and they suggested much of what the democrats added to the war bill was disingenuous. It's an assumption that the money spent on the war and future projections of spending on the war would be invested well and the interest on those hypothetical investments showed a good return. Future troop projections to 2017 are described as fanciful. This sort of thing doesn't really help the anti-war campaign because the figures are so easily pulled to pieces and shown to be a sham they are. The price of oil is little affected by Iraq. Why not stick to the real figures which are extreme enough? The war has cost the US $800 billion dollars so far, rising steadily from $80billion in the first year to $200 billion forcast for next year.
