I sued them and lost because the judge said I couldn't prove it but they put transmission fluid in my brake reservoir costing me a lot of money. The only justice I got was seeing that shop go out of business soon after.

Status: offline 		Nope, I take my car to the Ford or Lincoln/Mercury dealership and check the fluids before I go and save the paper towel to compare the color of the fluids after they get done.
Plus, I hang out and watch them.

Status: offline 		        One of the joys of paying somebody else to change your oil is the opportunity to watch them get dirty instead of you.   They don't get to change anything else, either.

Status: offline 		We don't have a Jiffy Lube here, but I had an experience like this at a Midas once.  I went in to get my break pads changed on an old Chevy I used to have, and they tried to convince me to buy all this extra crap for my breaks.  They tried that old ploy of they wouldn't guarantee the pads if I didn't get the extra work done.  I told them to take my car off the rack, and I'd take my business elsewhere.  They tried to charge me for the time the car was there, so I had to call the police to get them to give me my car.  The police told them they weren't allowed to keep my car, and they had to sue me if they wanted any money.  I immediately called the corporate office and told them what happened.  I got an apology and they offered to put my breaks on for free.  But, I told them that they had lost a customer over that whole entire mess.  I won't go to those quickie places anymore as a result.

I know a lot of people hate Wal-Mart, but they actually do a pretty good job with oil changes and basic servicing.  Sears is also pretty good about it too.  The only downside to either is that you usually have to wait an hour or so to get it done.

Status: offline 		Jiffy lube always shortchanged me on oil.  Always needed an oil change "sooner" when getting it done there.  I could never even manage to go 3,000 miles before the indicator went on.

Status: offline 		There is a guy I know that owns his own business that specializes in break service and repair. And he has told me that you would not believe the amount of scamming that goes on in the auto repair industry. He has said to never go to a place that advertises quick and cheap oil changes. Because they know most people that go there probably dont know much about their car's engine and also dont have time to fool around with it....therefore they either short your oil or dont even change your oil filter. And then people wonder why their engines start to fail and make noises by 60k.

If you must use one of those cheap places.....this is what you do:
1. Check your oil before you leave the business, and if the place is legit they will show you the dip stick.
2. Before going, open your hood and find the oil filter... get a black marker and make a small mark somewhere on the filter itself where people would not notice it. If after the service that mark is still there....they didn't change your filter. That's all the evidence you need to demand your money back.
Anytime you go to any place and they tell you that you need a bunch of repairs....dont agree to it. Take the vehicle to another place and see if they say the same thing. In other words, get a 2nd opinion.

This is why I always change my own oil. Yeah its a pain in the ass sometimes but at least I know it was done right.

I hope the corporation sees an eighty-percent net decrease in sales. And that pathetic, bald, fat dude{the regional manager} needs to be sucker-punched by a few of those customers that were cheated. It's hard for me to believe that the corporation would employ such a greazy looking MF.

That pretty much says it all.

If you don't know what they are doing to your car, and are taken in by things like the paper towel scam mentioned above, you are begging to be a victim, and there are plenty of places and people who will oblige you.

They also show me the dip stick before and after - and i can see it is mine as i watch them. As for air filters they show me how dirty it is before they put a new one in, everything they do is very visible.

Status: offline 		There is a lot ... a whole lot ... of scamming that goes one with any type of car repairs and maintenance.

You can't even always trust dealers.

You simply have to learn about cars, and/or have a mechanic that you trust to tell you the truth (and ones who are good, and honest, and willing to tell you the truth are as about as rare as hen's teeth).

I'm not sure how much this report indicts all of Jiffy Lube, across the US.  It is presented as a problem with possibly one district in California, possibly due to bad "command influence" of a dishonest district manager.  Interestingly enough, they had problems at 5 out of 9 stores that they visited .... but you heard nothing about the 4 in which they were apparently treated honestly and fairly.

That's actually the "man bites dog" story, not the bad treatment that they received at the other five.

Air filters and motor oil are supposed to get dirty, and the change in appearance alone isn't proof of a problem... showing the customer some dirty oil or a less than pristine air filter and telling them that the car needs a new filter, or a 'vacuum oil purge' is a prevalent scam.

Whether it is Jiffy Lube, Midas, the dealership, or some guy in his backyard, it is up to the individual mechanic to be honest, or to sell people things they don't need.
