I saw the strangest thing the other day.... Remember the days where you had to borrow a quarter to make a phone call or buy a soda? Well, those days may be ancient history soon. I saw for the first time terminals on soda machines that will take debit and credit cards. You scan your card, it authorizes it, then you push your choice and it deducts the dollar from your account. I've also seen many pay phones now have a place where you can swipe your card. Between paying bills online and using your debit card everywhere....how much of your money do you actually ever see? It seems money is no longer a phyiscal possession. It's all electronic digits on a computer screen. Many hotels and car rental businesses wont even accept cash anymore. Pretty soon, cash is going to be obsolete.

I wouldnt mind - except for having a bag full of paper! One receipt for the goods/services and another for the card transaction. I clear them out once a week generally, and once theyre screwed up into a ball its about the size of a tennis ball. Still need cash for some things though - some shops wont take a card for cigarettes, and I've yet to find a fish and chip shop that takes cards - which is odd, since Chinese, Indian, Italian takeaways take cards. Mind you, the latter also deliver and chips shops dont - niche in the market there? E

Easy answere here. Most on this site are cashless. Just ask em if they have debts!~!! lol

Well.....I'm one American who uses credit /debit cards less than three times a year. I love the smell, crackle and pop of new Franklins----I can't think of a better, more irresistible sound than that crackle. Why anyone would wanna cede the control coinage offers them... is totally beyond me. - R

I think it's great. I hate having to carry around a lot of cash, and I hate writing checks. I use my debit card for most things, but I do carry about 50 bucks on me just in case I need cash. My debit card has my picture on it too to prevent unauthorized use. Of course I am not sure how effective that is. I doubt very seriously if clerks really pay that much attention when they are ringing things up.

i hate cash, for myself personally. It has no shelf life; i could leave in the morning with $100 bill and come home broke without anything to show for it. Usng my debit card has also alleviated the need to go to the bank to get cash, where the lines are always long. i don't like ATM's; i feel vunerable and i have difficulty using them; plus sometimes i want a $10 bill. i just this past week scratched the verification code on my debit card so that it is no longer legibile, and i didn't memorise it. No more shopping online for me for awhile. pinksugarsub

I used to think a cashless society would be great. But now I'm not the biggest fan, seeing that it's really easy to turn off a database entry. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I prefer cash, though I do use the debit card often to. I wouldn't feel comfortable at all in a truly no cash society. It's to easy to manipulate and track. Could you imagine giving the local meth dealer your credit card number. NO WAY. LOL. Or the local prostitute. Exactly what would I spend my money on in a cashless society. .....kidding of course.... Maybe the savings rate would go up.

I very rarely use cash. I even use my card in the local bar.

Unfortunately it depends on what part of the country you are in. Most around here if you say debit or even atm they don't accept them. They need to the jails are full of check fraud. Yet you can go to the local dairy queen and write a check. People do it everyday. Check or cash...even the county offices are set up that way. No atm allowed. So, I find myself carrying around more cash than I have in my entire life. Also not shopping at those places who make it inconvenient to me. However, just my observations but I think people are more wealthy around here than anywhere I've ever been. Maybe its something about not being able to spend your money as easily?

they have a commercial here, where the music plays and the idiots at starfucks or somewhere like that dance and spin while purchasing their coffee with plastic..... then some poor guy pulls out cash, and things crash and folks trip and its horrible.....a pretty sure indication they are saying we dont want cash. that commercial irks me to no end.......its for visa.....not a store, but if a store ever chooses to run a commercial like that, i will make sure they dont get a penny of mine, even through a debit card. what was the question again?

If they keep up this "global economy" and outsourcing crap we'll be a cashless society for sure because no-one will have any. But, this "cashless society" stuff isn't new at all. The Kennedys have done it for generations. Ted Kennedy never carries cash with him. He's absolutely famous for stiffing bartenders and waitresses on big tabs! If he ever comes into your place it's "Cash up Front." Don't EVER let him "run a tab" or he'll "run from the tab." Yup, Ted Kennedy LOVES a cashless society!

I don't even pay at the pump. Why would I want anyone tracking my whereabouts and purchases?
