Pink, I don't think we have any "right" to go through life "not being offended."
"Offended" is one of those "pc" words used to try to control people's speech.
I believe in the First Amendment, and the Second....
It's an immpossible call.
"I disagree totally with what you say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."
That's a paraphrase but I think people get the gist.
That's why we allow the KKK, La Raza and other racial hate groups to demonstrate in public.

I personally don't care how others choose to type on a message board. I can ignore it or I can get upset, I see more point in ignoreing it than wasting emotions on being upset by words on a screen.

Firstly, its moronic to take the stance that no-one has the right not to be offended. Of course they do. Families burying dead veterans have a right not to have the funeral services disrupted by Far Right idiots who want to call them "homos" and wave placards.

No-one's rights obviate the rights of others, its pitiful that some walk around under that delusion. Call me a racist name and I'll probably laugh at you. Call my loved ones that name and what if I claim the right to hospitalise you? Call it my freedom of expression - I hate bigots.

The guidelines here ask people to behave with maturity. That means curbing racially offensive language. If you're too much of a petulant child to play nicely, perhaps people should come along and make rules for you.

And don't write here what you lack the courage to say in real life.

Secondly, the real tragedy I believe is that so few people here are prepared to stand up for groups who are slandered on this site. Kudos to those who have. But looking at other sites, which I have as a result of this issue, it seems that this hatred of so-called PC (aka decent manners) is unique to CM. Since it clearly doesn't offer any improvement to discourse that I can discern, I'm curious as to why it so often goes unopposed.

I'm not suggesting for a moment that contentious issues should not be discussed. And you can't ever eliminate all the sad but frankly nutty people. But if threads are abandoned just because the bigots arrive (as this one no doubt soon will be) it does nothing to advance anyone and serves only to alienate many more. Why do so many of you - of whatever background - tolerate the morons here to such an extent?

yes, you've said that before all these pc sites, where do they exist?  I have belonged to many groups for many different reasons, and I have yet to see one that is PC.

No, it's a logical position. Free speech means that- free. Not as long as it's inoffensive- just in general. As smarter people have said, paraphrased, popular speech doesn't need protection.

IMHO- Anything on these boards is free speech until it directly points at someone *naming* them. Any 21+ man or women who feels the need to make a race targeted thread is 1. Seeking advice or 2.Trying to start crap...However I dont go around day to day using the N word or WT or any other racial slurs, ignorant lonely people generally use them to amuse themselves..the days of using the N word in the same context as it was many years ago is gone...Im not saying racism doesnt exist...but for the most part it either slips through someones lips when amongst acquaintances that share the same view....or it remains in a cowards mind.......long ago one would dare walking through the Bronx using that word or Atlanta with their posse of freshly bleached sheets... but I highly doubt one would be so bold nowadays *winks*...The more we give attention to racism the more we revert back...kinda like feeding a fire...but thats just my opinion

I don't know what the laws are in England but from what I hear it's getting "pc" there to the point of rediculousness.

In the U.S. we're always taught to, "err on the side of Freedom."
People here are real big on their rights.
As for Assholes like the KKK and La Raza I want them out in the open so everyone can see them and know what they stand for!
Most of the time I don't agree with "Owner59" but dammit, he has the sacred right to speak his mind.
In this country anyone can walk the street with a sign all day long that says "BUSH SUCKS" and they have the right to do it!
If they had a sign in 1930's Germany that said "HITLER SUCKS" they'd be shot.
Now, some people may be "Offended" by a "BUSH SUCKS" sign but it's too bad, it's called "protected speech."
We CAN "criticise the King" in this country!

IMO it depends entirely on the context.
To not be allowed to point out the failings, the obvious in your face failings, of certain racial groups is wrong and paradoxicially does nobody any favours, especially the racial group in question, since it allows them to assume victim status and blame everyone else for their own inadaquacies.

Thus all Liverpudlians are welfare scroungers and hubcap thieves lol

Seeks, there is far greater variance in character and capability between the individual members within any identifiable "racial group" (if such really exists as an objective and quantifiable description, rather than a convenient category for gross generalisations) than between any one "racial group" and any other "racial group".

Now drop this bullshit line before I come over there, steal a hubcap and beat you with it (on behalf of Liverpudlians everywhere).


That said, it has not escaped notice that while most people on CM are careful not to use skin colour as a term derision, it is still permissible to use body weight (in either extreme) as an unnecessary adjunct to insults - e.g. "And that pathetic, bald, fat dude{the regional manager} needs to be sucker-punched by a few of those customers that were cheated." Substitute the race, religion or colour of your choice for the word "fat" in the previous statement and ask if it would pass muster.
