Anyone else out there become hooked on the games of the past?  As I never finished it in the first run I've developed a new obsession for Super Mario 64.  If anyone's unfamiliar, Nintendo's Wii has a system that lets you download games that were released in the past couple decades.  Including games from other systems like sega and turbografx16.

I like Galaga, it is fun to get a bunch of same age friends playing and seeing who can get the best score, one thing is for sure - I'm a lot worse at it now than I was when it was new.

I love old DOS and C64 games.  There are a lot of them that are abandonware now and in the public domain.  I also have a few old gaming platform emulators downloaded to my computer.  I love old games, I play them all the time.  I still have my Atari 2600 from when I was a kid.  It's 25 years old, and it still works.  Compare that to my playstation 2, which lasted 4 years before it started fucking up.

This is Darcy.

I am a lifelong gamer (in my mid-thirties now) and still adore the old games. When I first started out gaming I used to go down to the local arcade with my friend Nick and we'd play Galaga, Moon Patrol, Joust, Robotron, Star Wars, Phoenix, Moon Cresta, Mr Do, Dig Dug, Qix, Donkey Kong, Tip Top, Tempest, I Robot, Zaxxon, Scramble and many, many others until we ran out of money!

When the first consoles came along (my first was an Atari 2600) we carried on gaming on them (Nick had an Intellivision, so we got the best of both worlds between us), and then again when the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 came out (sooooo many great games on both machines, including Manic Miner, Summer Games, Impossible Mission, Jet Set Willy etc, etc)

Then again when the second generation consoles appeared, the Megadrive (Genesis for those of you in the US), and the SNES were both awesome for the time (and I had both at one time or another). Games like Super Mario World, F-Zero, Sonic The Hedgehog, Super Mario Cart - the list could go on and on - so many hours of fun.

With the advent of the PC I finally got my hands on MAME (Multi Arcade Game Emulator), and am the proud owner of several thousand ROMS of the old arcade games (of which I've distilled a compilation of the 200 or so best ones). Highly recommended for those of you who love your retro gaming.

And, of course, with Xbox Live i can now play these gems on my massive TV :)

Favourite game ever? Mine has to be Robotron - there's something both primal and zen-like in the way that you get into the zone when you play. All unnecessary brain functions shut down leaving you operating on pure instinct and reflex. Always a rewarding, but mentally and physically draining experience, and one of these days I'm going to get me an original Robotron cabinet!
