These writers need to adopt the Radiohead model and simply allow people to pay them if they feel like it.   Interesting to know that Jon Stewart simply reads jokes from a screen, and doesn't write them though.

That won't work. Radiohead have already been well established by the industry and so have enough fans to enable them to simply put something online and take their chances. Writers need to find people to produce their work, which means financing upfront and if distribution is going to be solely online, something a little more efficacious than viral marketing to let consumers know its out there.

The idea of following the Silicon Valley model has been mooted again recently because of the strike but the major flaw in that strategy is the fact that the studios own vast amounts of content and can eclipse any newcomers' profile with ease. So you'll own your work but only in a market where the big players control the value of it.

Most nightly comedians do not write all of their material.. I do not know of any that do... You do realize what a huge undertaking it is to write 20 minutes of material every night?

Actually, Stewart and Colbert both help write their material. It's an intrigal part of the process when you are doing that kind of comedy. The problem is, I think they are also members of the WGA, and thus can't write material for their own shows without facing stiff penalties from the guild. (Fines, loss of membership, possible kneecapping...)

My point was that there is no way it would be humanly possible to write that much comedy by yourself... Leno, Letterman, Carson all help write their routines, but they have help too.
