Ok- I am getting fed up- with the fact that my home remodling never ends. I was pondering- is it the costs?  The labor?  I now wonder if being it timewise is dragging out so long- that maybe I crave being in total control-[of it]

What is your situation, in the home?

solitudesmiles -> RE: Control of your home ?>\ (11/16/2007 4:19:36 AM)

even though its not techanly my home i moved in as a roomate, and then others moved in as roomates as well, i soon became "ruler" of the house lol...

LOL- yes- it dawned on me- that- surrendering control of my domicile- well- for unlimited amount of time- could be waht is eating me. today if i have any balls i will ask for my key back.

I no longer have to worry about such things; Thank God for that. I sold every piece of property that I owened when I moved back north, now I rent and let someone else worry about the cost of upkeep.

I inherited my house from my great grandfather. He built it as a wedding gift for my great grandmother in 1923. It really is my house. My name is on the paperwork. There is no mortgage. Under the roof resides me, my Sir, our three boys, occasionally my step son, 9 cats, 2 birds, a fish, a dog, 3 million spiders, and outside in the drainfield we have a travel trailer with two guests (actually I finally got the tractor working and yanked them out of the drainfield yesterday so now they are parked right outside my office window. Now, as to who really owns it? Do you ever REALLY own property? Or are we truly just stewards for the state? The peice of property I live on has been in my family for 163 years. I love my house and I love where I live. The house is slowly falling apart faster than I can fix things. I might have a degree in construction but my Sir doesnt always seem to realize that I just cant brace up an entire wall on my own one day during the babies nap time. I need to replace some siding, but the pattern used to mill the currrent siding isnt even made anymore, and luckily I still have friends at wayerhouser who will custom mill me however much I need for 12 cents a linear foot, but even if they were to show up tomorrow with three pallets of the stuff, once I rip off the siding thats crumbling from weather damage, the studs inside the wall are so soft they wont hold a screw anymore. And I cant replace the studs on my own. The top beams are solid still, so all I really need is a stud jack, but I dont own one, and its really not a one mom job. I did however just finish building two walls of brand new kitchen cabinets and installed a new stove on sunday. I had to move the electrical outlet for the stove and Im glad the new hole in the wall is hidden behind the stove because I didnt take the time to patch where the old outlet was. There are lots of little things like that. In my bathroom there is a nice picture hanging on my wall that is covering the hole where the old shower head was. So who really is in control of my home and how much work gets done here? Probably my UMs.......

WOW GhitaAmati ... if I were wearing a hat .. mine would be off to you ( and your family actually ... for retaining their home and property .. and keeping it in the family!!)
and I absolutely agree with you on ....
>> Do you ever REALLY own property? Or are we truly just stewards for the state? <<< ... it really feels like that ... doesn't it??
And legally .... well .... if the state wants what's yours .. you better have more money ... and better attorneys then they have.

being Native American ... deep in me is that long inherent / instilled(?) belief that No One really OWNS any of this earth ... we occupy it ... we fight over it ... we shed our blood for it ... but when we're gone ... and our children are gone and their children's, children's, children are gone ... the land still remains
( of course in the world as it stands ... who knows how long the Earth as we know it will remain )
I remember asking my great grandfather a question once, and in absolute seriousness, he replied
"that's a good question ... go and ask the rocks ... no one's been here longer .. be respectful and listen to what they tell you"
( I often miss his wisdom in the hustle and bustle of the modern age )

But …. For today … I live in the mountains .. Right in the middle of 120 acres, in a small, Very Solid stone and log house, that was built over 100 years ago.
It’s the Best Place In The World to live!!! … on the other hand … it’s the Worst as far as upkeep and maintenance!!
The plumbing is a nightmare … as is the heating and electric … and I am NOT a carpenter or contractor or anything else that will enable me to do any of the remodeling that would make things more modern or convenient.
( I could tell Y/you Such stories about my house … lol )
But the bottom line is that I LOVE my place … I have a hard time EVER seeing myself Any Where else … I get on well with the Spirits who have occupied the house and property LONG before I arrived … the house is rustic to say the least … but it’s comfortable and when I come home it always seems to wrap it’s arms around me and with warmth and love says … “I’m glad you’re back … we all missed you”

As far as “Control” over what happens as far as carpentry .. remolding .. electrical .. plumbing … or any of the other ….. I’m 100% in control, and on my own.

respectfully

some great replies here.  i am taking a break from home upgrades. i have my key back.

i am not sure if they can take a house in PA over a bad credit card. while the mortgage is doable- the credit card debt has been climbing....  argh.

i would NEVER build a house!  nope/

Lumus -> RE: Control of your home ?>\ (11/16/2007 1:36:33 PM)

I don't own a home or property [well, other than abdi [:)]].  I will probably own a home and more property [actual dirt and grass and house stuff...not another girl...] relatively soon.

So how should I vote here - based on my current situation, or the situation I know is already in the works? *scratches his head*

I'll go with this - I may not own where I currently live, but I'm certainly the boss of it.

Our house has been in the family since it was built in 1959.  Grandfather had it built, then sold it to my parents in 1993 because grandma had a yard addiction and as long as they had a yard she'd be out there in it.  It actally looked like it came out of Better Homes & Gardens.  She'd take care of the neighbors yards to keep her yard from looking like crap. 1993 is same year that maternal grandfathers estate settled and mom bought out her sibs for the farm (it's been in the family since 1810 I think)  We purchased the house in 2000 and my parents moved to BFE and put in a triple wide of all things - neighboring farmers dug huge hole and shoved the old house into it - it smoulder for weeks).

We gutted the entire inside.  That was fine.   In the last 3 years we've had to have the basement floor jacked up all the way around due to the crushed terra cotta drainage pipes backing water up into the basement walls, put in a sump pump, new concrete patio across the front of the house because it was slopping in toward the house, new roof...EVERY stinking sheet of wood had to be replaced, the water heater blew, then the a/c and furnace bit the dust.

After this I have to say time to paint, time to move.   I much rather rent and have it be someone elses problem when crap falls apart.   The credit cards are screaming. If we would have built at least it would have all been new and had a warranty.  Now I'm determined to stay here until I get half of the life out of everything we've done to it.

The triplewide and land , the freaking pipes freeze every year and it's junk. Once my dad passes I'm most likely going to speak with an attorney because of the trust and probably did a hole and push the trailer into it and let it smoulder.

I didn't use to feel like this.  I was glad that the house had been in the family since it was built and how long the land had been in our family but I'm burned out on repairs.
