I'm thinking the Republican run is simply a way to have his name out there longer. He's run as a Libertarian before, and I'm pretty sure his actual goal is the Libertarian nomination again.
He knows he's not going to get the Republican nomination, but he's getting press. If he runs for awhile as an R then when the nomination goes to whoever he can drag his name back over to the Libertarians with a swell of support that they drool over. It's a smooth move to get Libertarian policy into the spotlight of the national race. Because the Libertarian party can't get this kind of press with the lockdown the R and D have on the process.

Expect to see Ron Paul's name on the Libertarian ticket for 2008.

If Ron Paul was actually elected this country would be a free-for-all two weeks into his presidency.

If we even make it two weeks.

There have also been successful third parties as well…We were very close with Ross until we found out he was a nut. One of these days, if the main parties do not start reflecting the wishes of the people, a viable alternative candidate will come along and turn Washington on their heads.

Yes, and there are people who say Ron Paul is a nut.  But I have yet to hear anyone state any reasons, other than that he would not be able to facilitate his platform very well.  I happen to disagree with that, and I think that it would scare the shit out of Washington, D.C.  if someone like Ron Paul was to get into the White House.   I would still like to hear some better reasons than  "It wouldn't work, even though his ideas are good, so we will just have to continue to choose betwen the lesser of two evils."  Or..."He is too radical, and I would not want to take the chance of losing some of my safety nets."

DustyGold, exactly!
Washington is afraid of Ron Paul.
The lawyers and lobbyists would be cast out into the DPS (dreaded private sector) and not be at the trough sucking up our tax dollars.
Last week I got a letter from the Republican National Committee with a questionaire and seeking money.
One of the questions they asked was who I'd vote for.
They had all the Republican Candidates listed but lo and behold, Ron Paul wasn't on the list!
There was a block and space down at the end that said "Other" so I checked it and wrote "Ron Paul" and mailed it with no money of course! And on the back of the envelope I wrote, "Go Ron Paul!"
Yes, they're definately afraid of Ron Paul!
Think what we could do if we had a bunch of Ron Pauls in the House and Senate!
Today I got a bunch of flyers from Clinton, Abbadabba, Romney- the second one this week, Fred Thompson (2), and a few others.
They're all hitting S. Carolina hard the last three weeks with mailings and phone calls.

*LOL, Popeye!*
They haven't started to hit Arizona yet.  I am waiting.  I do not declare a party.  I don't like either of them as parties, and I look at the indivduals.  But even more fun, I get all the info in My mailbox and My phone rings and rings. Everybody wants to talk to Me because everybody is after My vote.
I am so popular!

A Modest Proposal:

In the myth of King Arthur, the king himself was magically linked to the welfare of Briton. Literally, if his policies and his laws were good for the country, he would be heathly and happy, a live to a ripe old age. However, if he was a bad ruler, and the country suffered, he would become weak, sick and possibly die.

Now, it seems to me, with today's modern technology, we could effect this with our leaders. The day they are sworn in, they are taken to a hospital, and a pacemaker is implanted in their chests. We link these to Wall Street, and various other economic indicators. We also do this with the CEOs of energy, media, and other "bedrock" industries.

The next time someone suggests torture is good for out country... they flatline.
The next time they push through something as bone headed as Patriot II,... flatline.
The next time they put a lie in the State of the Union that pushes us into war... dead.

Maybe not practical... but it's fun to think about....
