Paraffin wax melts at a lower temperature and there is less chance of causing burns. Religious and emergency candles are usually made of paraffin. You will also want to be very careful if you are using scented candles because some of the oils that are added can increase the temp or cause allergic/caustic reactions. My best advice would be to get a paraffin wax spa. I have one and the wax is always the right temp and you can melt large amounts at once.

You need to find the solid colored candles that are colored all the way through. Those are better. They get hotter than the others. The ones that are white wax and just colored on the outside do not produce a lot of heat and melt kind of colorless. I have a picture on my profile on CM of a huge wax sunshine on my back, if you wnat to take a look at it. Good luck and enjoy the wax play!

I should also add that, especially when using candles, the height from which it is dripped is important.

As mentioned parrafin wax is typically considered the best to use, because of its low melt point.  If you want to do decorations and patterns, you can get those big glass religious candles, and melt them in a crock pot filled about half with water on low heat...then allow them to melt completely, and you can use a variety of brushes, scoops or spoons to create the patterns.

It's best to start higher. It really depends on the tolerance of the bottom. Of course, there is also a point that if it is too low...anyone will suffer burns. Skin is skin...lol.

The most important thing to know is that it will get everywhere. I use 'chinet' disposable tablecloths to protect everything is sight, including the futon way over there...

I have switched from parrafin to soy wax.  Soy is natural and is a softer wax than can be rubbed into the skin as a moisturizer when play is done.  I learned to make my own candles...so I know exactly what is going into them.  I use body safe fragrance that is used in soap products and also natural dye.  It is fun to make several layers of colors in candles.  If you want information on making your candles I would be happy to share my resources.  It is very inexpensive and you don't need anything special..you probably have it all in your kitchen.

The melt point of a wax is important.  I use a soy wax that melts at 120 degrees.  Some waxes...have melt points of 160-170 degrees...so you can really burn someone.  Don't buy "dripless" candles...they burn much hotter than most.

The spa paraffin wax melters are great for this..I have one of those too...but it is a little big and bulky to take to a dungeon party.

PS - Make sure you always have a bowl of ice water handy..in case of burns...treat them immediately.

i would recomend testing dropping wax on the back of your (the top's) hand (like you would test a heated baby bottle) to figure out what height produces what temperature, start way up high, and go lower....now this doesn't tell you what the bottom will interpret as good and bad, but it will give you a starting point....ie, if it's too high, there is no "hot" and its mostly solid by the time it hits skin, and if it's too low, you can burn them pretty severely in a bad way....

Others have already mentioned that different candles will hit the skin at different temperatures, depending on the height from which the drop is released.  The greater the height, the more time the liquid wax has to cool before impact.

I suggest pre-testing your candle(s).  Use the back of your wrist, similar to the time-tested method to measure the temperature of milk from a baby bottle.  Start at the maximum height to avoid burning yourself, and move down in small increments until you begin to feel discomfort.

Have fun!!

There are many different types of candles to use, but my Dom uses BDSM candles that you can find any just about any adult store. Other candles i have heard that work well are any white candle and to avoid any dark colored candle. Best of luck and enjoy

Wax Play

Wax Play
This is my general wax play design, easily modifiable if you want to
include multiple people.

Supplies: wax, long tip lighter, sheet or tarp, baby oil, knife,
baby powder, blindfold, (if using a crock pot, ladle, spatula,
paintbrush, any other spreading toys that look interesting)

Get the wax: Either two blocks of paraffin and two glassed church
candles melted together in a crock pot, or just the church candles
for easier transporting. I haven't noticed much temperature
derivation using these types of candles, but white wax is harder to
see where it falls and green tends to just look black on a person.
Start prep at least 2 hours before the scene by lighting the candles
or starting the wax to melt. If the candles are cold, it will take
longer and the wax won't melt as evenly

Prep the area: Flat surface is necessary, a bondage or massage
table usually works fine and is padded. Outside is nice because you
don't have to worry about getting wax on anything. If you are on
the floor, put a flannel sheet or comforter down first to keep
things from being too cold. Cover with an old sheet or tarp, and if
you're off the floor, cover the area nearby as well. Wax will get
everywhere! Lay out all supplies beforehand, you don't want to have
to leave burning candles or naked person alone too long. Also, make
sure your area is well-heated. Even though the wax will get them
warm and give them a nice shell, when it comes off they will feel
the cooler air.

Prep the people: Don't wear your good fetish gear! Again, wax will
get everywhere. For the waxer, wear throw away clothes and/or an
apron. For the waxee, get them naked and blindfolded. I like to
have their focus totally on the wax sensations and you don't have to
worry about wax splattering into eyes. Lay them down on the
surface, starting stomach down usually works best.

Start the scene: Start to connect with the bottom by massaging
their skin, letting them relax into position and get used to your
touch. Massage the baby oil onto their skin. Not only does this
feel yummy, but prevents wax from painfully sticking to hair and
makes it much easier to peel or scrape off. Once you're fully into
the scene, you can get into the wax.

Waxing: I start generally about 18 inches above the persons skin.
Get a good full layer all over their body. Be careful about
dripping on the sides as the skin is more sensitive. Once you've
established an initial layer, you can have more fun with sensations,
bringing the wax lower or higher to build heat (the higher the wax,
the more the splatter). You can paint the wax on, let it drip
slowly or just wash it over them with a ladle. The feet are also
lots of fun. On the stomach, be careful of the belly button.
Sometimes it's good just to put a plug of wax in there or cover it
with a cotton ball.

Removing wax: Wax is likely to still be slightly soft and pliable.
If you're peeling the wax, getting as much in one motion is a very
awesome feeling for the sub. Slowly start at the edges and pull up,
gathering the wax as you go. If you scrape, just press down gently
and pull towards the wax and down. There's always a few drips and
splatters to scrape off. If you've used oil, it should come off
fairly easily. Don't try to get off every piece of wax- a good
shower will do the best job at that.

After the wax: Once you've removed the wax, I sprinkle babypowder
all over the skin. The skin is very sensitive at this point and the
cool softness of the powder feels like rose petals just falling
down. You can rub the powder in and smooth over the skin. This
will help dry off some of the oil as well.

If you want to reuse your sheet, put it in the freezer to freeze the
wax, take it outside and get as much as you can off by shaking or
pulling it. Then toss in the washer and drier to remove the rest.

I love painting designs and messages on them, just use an old artists paintbrush ... the advantage is that the wax cools a bit on the brush so is less likely to burn them and is more controllable (and gives you less arm-ache!) than drips. Might be good to start that way, progress to larger quantities when you are better able to judge the temperature and workability of the wax. Have fun!

I bought some white votive candles at Bed Bath and Beyond.  I tested on myself before using them on a submissve.  Hot but not burning hot.  The higher up you drip it from the more it will cool before it hits the skin, however don't go too high up.  The first time I used candlewax I dripped it from about 3 feet up and she was on her back.  After the scene she told me it was splattering on her face when I was dripping it from that height.  I wish she had told me that when it was happening because wax could have splattered in her eyes.  Something I'm careful about now.

wax can be messy but doesn't need to be.  ice applied afterward makes the wax easier to remove with less mess.  i recommend having a set of sheets reserved for wax play only.  accidental spills on carpet are easily removed with a warm iron and paper towels.
