A successful dynamic is a balancing act where opposite equals equal.
for example; sadism plus masochism

'baby' plus mommy

Peanut butter plus Jelly

Anything plus Bacon.

Actually non masochistic service oriented subs can be perfect matches for sadists- they get HURT, they feel PAIN.  Sadists get off on that.

Balance is important, but that also comes from compatibility.  A person who has a need to be on time for things would not be a good match for someone who will never care about being on time.

You are such a lateral thinker.....but then I asked for it with a OP like equals.....mind you it has given me an idea....

Perhaps you should.

And there's a pairing for you.  Someone who enjoys serving as an object, and someone in need of a lap tray for their breakfast.

I have no idea what makes our dynamic work. I am not a masochist but my partner is quite an extreme sadist at times. Probably what works for us is that I love the idea of taking the pain to make him happy and he knows that is the case.

As for the relationship in general there are so many things that make it work. As I said in the other thread we are in a semi open relationship where he sees other women but I am monogamous. Throughout all of this I have never felt less than totally loved and protected and completely comfortable with him. On average I talk to him at least 2 or 3 times a day and still look forward to getting home to see him at night.

I had just about stopped looking for a relationship and decided to look for a play partner. What I found was the perfect man for me. It took a long time to get there, and I certainly "road tested" a few bangers to get to the perfect one.

This gives me heart.

Chocolate + peanut butter = The goodness.

A successful dynamic, I'd have to think, is considerably more complex that all that.

One of the things that has always fascinated me on an intellectual level is binary oppositions...

I have a definite yen for yang[:D]

I tend to think that opposites are just extremes of one another.

As far as making a successful dynamic... I am of the opinion that if I go on about what makes my dynamic "successful" I will end up jinxing it somehow. I have never felt very qualified to comment on such things even when blissfully contented in my own situation.. and the weird thing is I get asked for relationship advice often.. maybe that it why?...hmmmmm

I had all but shut the computer down and making evening tea....late here...and thinking about your dynamic again. I was thinking that it is really so close to the arrangement Dom and I have. For me, giving me the freedom to have whatever partners i want has actually affirmed my sense of self-esteem....
but as for Him seeing whomever he wants to has made me think about how this would affect most women in a relationship....sorry about the most type generalisations here...again it's late here...but if I were not so self assured....then Him seeing others would certainly make me feel insecure.....maybe that's what holds most into a self imposed prison of monogamy-but-lies....notice I've strung those words together there as i can't really think of how else to express it....
. So really my dynamc at the moment affirms both of our senses of self-esteem.
I just wanted to ask you if you susie ever felt threatened by him seeing others? and is this pasrt of your bdsm dynamic or just a separate aspect to relationship?

I agree about the binary-opposition-trap...but don't we get a great deal of that on here....like D/s   and or S/m as if that is really all the power exchange is really about.....
but I am still interested in the concepts of dynamics even if I too get stuck with statics to convey them

To say the least, of course.

I've had 'opposite dynamics' that were superb with others, but...alas there were always other issues. So, the perfect equals-of-equals situation doesn't always end up in happy freak land.

The ratio or proportion of equality shouldn't have to be opposite. It's nice to think that IMO that it's like a whack-a-mole game. The balance shifting some from one to the other - and hopefully propelling the dynamic further.

Nature tends to seek balance afterall (even if it can't sometimes or often be achieved).

If you look at the symbol of Yin and Yang, the eye of one complementary aspect is composed of the essence of the other.

They cannot exist without the other, and define themselves by what their complement.

Taoism teaches that what is important is the force or principle which binds them, not the conflict itself.
