4x + 2y = 36
y = -2x + 18
A straight line sloping downwards from left to right. crossing the Y axis at 18 and the X axis at 9

That produces  a triangle with the points at (0,0) (0,18) (9,0)
Area of  a triangle equals half the base times the height.
Using the X axis as the base we have 9/2  * 18 = 81 units.
Using the Y axis as the base we have 18/2 * 9  = 81 units.
using calculus
the integral of -2x + 18 is
-x^2 + 18 x + k.   k = a constant
inserting the range values from the x axis 0 and 9 gives
(-9 * 9 + 18 * 9 + k) - ( 0 + k)
-81 +162 equals.......81 units.
maths works he he he he he he he he he.

Oh boy, here is my theory. Just as there are dyslexics that struggle with letters rearranging themselves there are those ( ME ME ME) that struggle with evil nasty numbers shifting around. From day one I failed at mathmatics. I blame the number line.0.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10 Okay, now why the heck is zero in there if it doesn't have an amount? Huh? So yup, I counted zero as one. From that point on I was doooomed. It didn't help that by age 7 I had read full books causing the teachers to assume I was bright and needed no guidance. It also was weird when the new math and the metric system was almost introduced. The teachers couldn't switch themselves to metric much less teach us how to do so. As an adult the metric system almost almost makes sense because it is LOGICAL!Math is not logical otherwise to me, the numbers really do shift on me. Example, my dom arrives next Sunday at 2pm. When I count the days to his arrival I naturally don't count today nor the day he arrives......which means he arrives in 6 days. Not um yeah counting on my fingers here erm...8 days. How can it be 8 days if there are 7 days in the week and he arrives on Sunday when today is Sunday??Howwwww can that be 8? Oh gods I'm hyperventilating now. Who started this evil thread?*whimpers*

before you changed your CM id to Camille, how many posts had you made under the name Camille ?
0 or 1 or 2.....or 8 or 9 ?

 I'm totally serious. And to answer your question... lets see. 'Before' I changed to camille how many posts had I made using that nick? None cuz.. I hadn't yet used it! But if you ask how many I have made while using camille as I am typing this one I would say 1212 but it goes up by one when I hit 'ok'.I can't be the only math-dyslexic in the world .. (omg can I be the only? arghhhh) I seriously struggle with even the most basic of math and it can be really embarrassing.

I can tell you a "funny" about zero.
4*3*2*1 = factorial 4 = 24  written !4
3*2*1     =factorial  3 = 6    written !3
2*1         =factorial  2 = 2    written !2

so whats factorial 0 = !0
Believe it or not the answer is 1. Thats a mind bender that is lol

You lost me with the numbers. No I'm not leading you on, tho at this point I wish I were.I thought I had answered correctly? Sigh. I'm not dumb, I just can't do math... like some people who are bright cannot spell. Luckily I can hide my math deficiency easier than hiding a spelling or reading one.

 I've always had a love for math. Unfortantly, I was never very good at it. But I'm still facinated by calculations, predictions, formulas, and eqations all done by math.

Liked Math, okay.... Algebra is just the way to excercise your mind ....to replace one value for another, the more you do this, the more you are using your memory retrieval/replacement....to where they want you to break down or build up ; exchange a series of values for another series of values, and then... they want you to check yourself, to see if every step you did was correct, and now you are to make sure it all equals out !!!!!!... What the hell!!!!! If I need to resolve a problem, I don't need to be fluent in exponential theory to know the best answer is when every one involved in the problem walk away, feeling as though they have won!!!!! It seems like we won't use this in our lives, but really... the more you use your brain, I guess the more you strengthen those synapses... anti-alzheimers theory?.....Geometry.... well as long as they don't want to add more algebra in the mix....some day, I'll have to do the calculus....although I am trying to figure out a way to obtain my degree without taking it! ANY IDEAS?

If its a science/engineering  degree then you really should not be able to get a degree without studying calculus.

Probability in maths. defeats me. For example.
When 10 coins are spun, what is the probabilty that  5 will fall as heads.
Questions like that. he he he he he

I just showed my posts to my dom and he got a great laugh out of it  then he said not to worry because that is why I have a calculator, fingers & toes to use for counting. I did like algebra kind of.. because it had letters in it and for me letters do not go all shifty and devious. I didn't pass algebra but I liked it more than other math! If I had been able to do basic math I think I may have excelled in algebra but alas one cannot teach an old dog new math.Story problems were an issue too, but only because I really wanted to know who was on that train going to New York and I didn't care how fast they were going. Hmm suddenly I feel a bit sorry for my teachers lol. There really should be some sort of name for people who are bright (moi) and cannot do math (moi) but are otherwise practically perfect (moi, again) dang it. R will be here in 170 hours, that is much easier to figure out than how soon he will be here in days. Daze. Yup. Lordy now my idjitness is here for all to see

...i remember arguing with my primary school teacher that 6 times 0 ought to be six. See, you start with six then don't multiply it............

I used to say that 6 divided by 0 is 6 but my calculator keeps telling me the answer is error.

But that’s taking 6 one time . . . (6)(1) = 6. If you don’t take six, you’re taking “no” six at a time, which is zero "sixes".

I remember getting in big trouble at school because I kept insisting that 3 times 3 = 6.
I was about 9/10 at the time and that was when teachers could be both verbally and physically abusive if they so chose.

I remember the teacher quite clearly and I haven't thought about the incident for years.
Miss Jones a wild Welsh Woman lol.
I remember she used to use strong perfume and lots of make up.
Ruined me for life she did !

I enjoyed, and easily grasped, Math, Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra, Calculus, and the “variants”.  Also enjoyed the word problems.
 
Enjoyed math to the point of doing things outside of class that related to it . . .
 
Like experimenting with my own version of a three dimensional chess set up, or reading stories like this:

Which lead me to doing things like trying to envision a fourth axis (Simultaneously perpendicular to the X, Y, and Z axis).
 
Even some of the people that didn’t enjoy math could enjoy the story in that link.

oooooh I love math. All kids of math. What I hate is English. Id have had a flipping 4.0 GPA in college if they hadnt forced me to take english. Took it 3 times before I could pass it. Now math...all kinds (well, except for accounting which really shouldnt be counted as a math class at all)..I did great at. Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Calc, couldnt get enough so I went on to physics and engineering classes. In fact its WHY I majored in an engineering degree. One of my professors told me early on that you dont have to know how to spell to be an engineer..I was hooked from that point on....

Almost forgot about Accounting!  I was apprehensive at first because of the “horror” stories, but I ended up enjoying those classes. Plus another one that applied Algebra to real world business scenarios. Took them once as an undergraduate and another as a graduate student.
