Alice in Chains was easily my favorite band of that era, and an all time favorite as well.  Layne Staley's side project Mad Season is worth a listen as well (mostly for River of Deceit)

Ass, AIC is not only my favorite band of the era but one of my top five all time. Just shredded everything else in sight.
I saw them years and years ago in a 5000 seat hall with the screaming ees and got to hang out backstage with them afterwards.
A very good night.
Then seeing them at lollapalooza, layne wearing a suit and those bug glasses in august just killing it.
Awesome stuff, not a bad song ever.

Screaming Trees, one of the most underrated bands, IMO.

I saw them in a Portland club, maybe held 200, not long before they hit, and was completely blown away.  Funny thing, I saw Nirvana in the same place and thought they sucked.
