Ok, so there must be a stray cat network somewhere with my name up front. I've taken in 5 strays already, feeding 3 very wild kittens every night, and now another really cute kitten was at my door 3 weeks ago, and when I opened it, she ran right in...and has been here ever since. Now here's my bitch...She was covered with fleas and all my cats had them with in minutes, which has cost me $100 to rid them...and one just jumped on my foot. Next, she doesnt get along with one of my cats(it's out of control)...which just cost me $50 for 75mL of Feliway spray(Behavior modification spray) All of her vacs, which cost $75...and another $30 for all her general care items. I get home tonight, and my daughter, the one who begged me for 3 days straight to let her keep her, says maybe we should find a new home for her...she's gotten way too mean! Which she has...she came in the door purring, and it quickly changed to evil kitty(didnt take long to figure out why someone booted her out the door) But GD...I've spent nearly $250 on this stupid cat! And why do these F strays keep coming to my door!

70 years ago, hobos used to put a mark on a house if it were a good place to get meal or other good treatment. Maybe the stray cats do that now?

But ouch - $250 plus a lot of headache and heartache over a stray cat that didn't work out. That would hurt.

Tell Me more about this Feliway spray. I have a Siamese who is being very territorial and mean to O/our other kitty.

Incedentally, even if you decide not to take in kitties, most cities have a catch/spay/realease program through the local shelters.

If you're willing to take the time, they can provide you with humane traps, and then either free or very low cost spay/neutering.

It's been proven to -significantly- reduce feral/stray cat populations in cities.

(<--is involved in her local one, which is how she got her current foster kitty.)

Mandalin, Can I ask if you've neutered this little Hell Cat? Sometimes that will make a world of difference. As for being the *home* of strays, somebody has your number knowing you've a soft heart for critters, or, you've really ticked someone off. Check the local paper and make sure nobody took an add asking for strays with your address.

Yup, my aunt tends to take in strays as well and her local shelters pay for the traps and the spaying. Of course, all stray cats are kept either outside or in the basement completely separated from the house cats until they are fixed/clean. You don't want feral cats mixing with house cats. So see what's out there to help you, might end up being a great way to help out the cats and your community.

Good on you for helping those kitties! I think they can sense which of us are the suckers. We must emit some kind of 'soft touch' pheremone. I found brother and sister strays 2 weeks ago. They were adorable and quite the little characters, but I just couldn't keep them. The local paper will run a free ad for six days so I posted one and had those little buggers in a first class loving home in no time. They even got to stay together! The ad ran for another 4 days, and I must have gotten 20 or 30 calls. Really made me feel good about being a human and that's not always easy for me.

Sorry I don't have anything helpful to offer. Just wanted to tell you how good it makes me feel when I hear of people helping animals. So, thanks!

Well, now today weve decided to keep her...the Feliway spray has performed miracles with her! And she's been soooo sweet, just as she came in the door that night! No, she's not spayed yet, has to weigh 2.5 pounds, and she's only about 8-9 weeks old weighing about 1.75 pounds. But she will be as soon as she's able! I work with a local "old school" vet here in town that neuters males for $10 and spays females for $20! I love him, he's a saint! He does this for me because there are no local shelters in the small town I'm from, only the sheriffs department and they wont deal with stray animals, or abused and neglected animals for that matter! The nearest shelter is 40 miles away, and they charge $25 an animal to bring them in...A HOLES! And they have a 72 hour policy, if they're not adopted in that time...they are put to sleep. So, I mostly find homes for them at the Amish Community about 5 miles from here. Amish are people who's religion is all about being simple and plain. They still drive a horse and buggy(cars are sinful) wear only black, green, or blue hand-made clothing(long dresses), no buttons only straight pins(button are sinful) no phones, or electricity, only oil lamps, and wood burning stoves...they live on huge farms with lots of cats...and they are good honest people, just a little backwards in time! The cats have a different kind of life there, but it's a home a least. Thanks for all your words of support everyone!

Mandalin, I'm glad things are working out for your new baby.

When you place animals with the Amish, have you thoroughly checked out the living conditions for them? The Amish are notorious puppy (and maybe kitten) millers who keep their breeding animals in horrendous conditions and supply pet stores with sick and unhealthy babies. Are the animals you place there spayed and/or neutered when you place them? Do you ever do any follow-up on their quality of life?

Don't get me wrong, helping our furry friends is a wonderful thing, but when I hear "Amish" my red flags go up immediately.

The Amish in my area are very respectable people and the only things they sell are their baked goods. I know the family that I take the cats to and I visit them often, as I go to the store that they run and I buy my straw from them, and the cats are always there. They are all spayed and neutered with the vet I mentioned above. I have only taken 9 cats to them, the rest I have at my house(7), or are at my parents farm(12) and they also are spayed and neutered. I can easily say my whole pay check goes for getting them fixed and buying them food!
I have never heard of the Amish running puppy and kitty mills, at least here in my part of Iowa. But I sure will look into it and ask around though! From what part of the country do you know the Amish are doing this? I'm sure the elders would love to know this is going on and tarnishing their name!

Hi Mandalin,

It's so nice to see someone who cares about the cats they place. As far as where Amish puppy milling takes place, first place to look would be the Midwest... that's where most puppies and kittens are shipped from originally (if they survive the journey). After that, Pennsylvania.

It is a well-known fact in both the dog and cat fancies that the Amish run puppy mills at the very least. While I'm sure most Amish people are upstanding citizens, anyone who would engage in this kind of behavior is, in my opinion, truly disgusting.

Yes...you are right. After talking with people on other boards and doing searches, I have found alot of info about this. It is very sad and heart breaking to think anyone could do something so cruel to animals. There should be a law against all milling of animals, I looked but found none.

I do know, the Amish that I given the cats to, do not do this, and they are all well taken care of, as are all their animals. So, I dont have to worry about them.

It is such a shame what some people will do for money. Puppy and kitty milling, dog fighting, are just a few, and it makes me insane to think of whatever else there is.

Thank you for informing me and everyone else that did not know this. Maybe this will open more eyes to these kind of horrors!

Mandalin, you are welcome. I'm always happy to inform people about the Amish's practice of puppy and kitten milling. I know they are not the only ones involved in this practice, but they DO have a rep.

It would be a good thing if the sale of companion animals from pet stores would be made illegal, no if's and's or but's. That would put such a crimp in the millers' business that MAYBE they would stop. <sigh>

Ohhh cellogrrlMk, I cant even go into a pet store and see all those poor puppies and kittens crammed into cages too small and stacked 4-5 high! There's one in Waterloo(I wont give the name, but initials are EP) It's the largest in the city, and the smell about knocks you over when you walk in. Piss and poop all over the floors, nasty, dirty cages, empty water dishes......your right, that should be illegal also! It's milling if I've ever seen it!

Mandalin, if it's that bad call the Better Business Bureau. Before you do that see what breeds are there and try to contact those breed rescue groups. The hard part is preventing the animals from being impounded and destroyed... but maybe some of the rescue groups can help you.

I was just there today, and the smell was noticeable but not too strong (at least not until I walked back to the small pets room). Perhaps they have cleaned up some?

I saw two large black cats, either of which I would have loved to have! They were like minature panthers. <sigh> But I am moving next year and am not sure whether my new home will be pet-friendly.
