I have a sub whose living conditions are such that any spanking must be done quietly.  A gag works for the noises he makes but he's completely paranoid about the sounds of a flogger or cane being applied to his ass carrying through the walls of his apartment.  Any suggestions on what to use that would be soundless and yet effective?

give him ear plugs and he wont hear a thing.  just tell him it was nice and quite.  if the neighbors come over and complain tell them you will be more quite next time. smile

Why not try some of that loud thumpy music? Even if you don't turn it up terribly loud, you should be able to match your strokes to the beat, and disguise it that way.

I can't imagine the sound of the act ever makes more noise than I do receiving it.  However, turn on the tv or some music to cover it, the sound of the act is never going to be louder than the usual adventure movie on the tube, unless you're using power tools or something.  [;)]

I was also thinking music. And if you put on something like Spice Girls, the neighbors will put in ear plugs or put on music of their own, which will further help your cause ;-)

I had to soundproof My spare bedroom to keep the neighbors from throwing hissy fits..
Eggshell cartons !! Seriously, if you stick them on the ceiling and the walls they help to stop the sound..then you can spank him as hard as you need to. Just get a ton of them, and cover the walls . You dont even have to hammer them in with nails, you can use thumbtacks.
My other suggestion if he is concerned about having aesthetically pleasing walls..They make door covers and heavy sheets that are rather soundproof. Generally they are used in studios and such, but I'm pretty sure they arent that expensive. Ill see if I can dig up some links!!

When they knock on the door to complain, ask if they want some. You'll find that they won't hear a sound after that!

Dear OHDomme, Ladies and Gentlemen;
 
I agree with the egg containers and the theater drapes being hung.  Other options would just go to a BDSM gathering/party, out in the woods, rent a hotel/motel room, see if you can rent/borrow another's dungeon that is local.
 
In apartments--sometimes having an idea when neighbors are in and out, such as work and such is helpful.  It can also be a play rehearsal and leave leaflets under the neighbor's doors so they will know its going to be unusual noise.  Practicing torture, killing scenes or something like that.
 
One can also give tickets or money to the neighbors, so they are encouraged to step out--your treat when your scenes will take place.  They can enjoy dinner out at Pizza Hut or the movie at the theater down the street.
 
But, just think--in the woods, a fallen tree as a spanking bench and branches as overhead beams for restraint or in between two trees --spread eagle and be enjoying nature.
 
Just some thoughts.

A motel room.

Barring that, spank with soft gloves on or with a padded paddle. For floggers, remember that the thinner the fall, the more stingy it is, so you get more buck for your effort and less sound from the impact.

Denser, narrower materials make less noise when they hit. They go deeper into the flesh and create more bruising than a flogger or a cane, but they're quieter.  Wider, lighter materials are more slappy/noisy.

I never thought of canes as that noisy, really. 

Maybe if he misbehaved less...  [;)]

Spanking is amazingly noisy, even in suite-style hotels.  Trust me.

Music, being far away from shared walls, carpeting, drapes, and any kind of sound baffle help.  Also, thinner toys like canes are very quiet, though maybe not as much fun as the one and only toy. 

Park the car somewhere deserted?

 Cup your hand, it'll hurt like a bitch with hardly any noise. If you'll be doing flogging yes it can be quite noisy, twirl it around tight like a rope with one hand while holding the handle with your dominant flogging hand, as you go to flogg, release the twirled up end. It will muffle the sound in half and hurt even worse[sm=crop.gif] Now you just have to make sure the gag really works for their noise level and your set.

Try a white noise machine and music or tv. By using layers of sounds, it will be difficult for anyone to identify the spanks instead of assuming they are part of the tv show.

Its about him not wanting people to know, really. So take him to a public club, and spank him in public, wearing a hood, for a few sessions.
In time, he will be ready for you to take off the hood.
