Rhode Island Hospital was fined $50,000 and reprimanded by the state Department of Health Monday after its third instance this year of a doctor performing brain surgery in the wrong side of a patient's head.

"We are extremely concerned about this continuing pattern," Director of Health David R. Gifford said in a written statement. "While the hospital has made improvements in the operating room, they have not extended these changes to the rest of the hospital."

The most recent case happened Friday when, according to the health department, the chief resident started brain surgery on the wrong side of an 82-year-old patient's head. The patient was OK, the health department and hospital said.

When I was a nurse back many years now, when we were prepping the patient for surgery, it seemed to be a standard practise to mark the appendage or side the surgery was to be performed on, even if it was obvious which side or part was damaged. The patient would certainly tell you one way or the other. Easy quick and cheap. I wonder if that is still happening today. Of course brain surgery is a lil different in as much as you cant see or tell what is wrong just by lookin at it or asking the patient where it hurts, thats down to the neuro person to know his/her stuff. \

When I had my emergency gallbladder hack/removel/ickyness I told my ex who had brought me to ER to please use his ballpoint pen to write 'gallbladder' on my stomach. The staff was not amused but I didn't do it for amusement, I've read too many reports of things left behind and other horrors. It happens. There was a gross program on Discovery not too long ago about all the different things accidently left behind inside of patients. Ew.

With how things are going, you'll go in one day and they'll mess up so much you'll come out with an intellect.
Of course that intellect will come with not remembering who you are, or were you parked the car, not to mention what the color blue is...Laughs..
