I was reading some older posts on the forum and was wondering when it comes to fireplay what kind of mix do you use?  I have tried looking for alcohol in the local stores but the percentage of alcohol is always really low.

70% is the best is dosent burn as hot 90% is to hot on the skin. If you have not used fire play before or if you are new to it feel free to drop me a e-mail and I will be happy to walk you threw the safe gaurds. Yes you can burn someone realy easialy with it. But it can be so fun as well. Expecially eternial fire.

You want the lower percentage of alcohol.

I agree that 70% is the best and you really want to avoid 90% or other accelerants.  Make sure you are really really safe when doing a fire scene.  It is one of the few circumstances where there is another living thing in the scene.  Fire will do what it wants and the first second you don't respect that, bad things can happen.

adding yes the 70% is what i also use  but i also use a fresh sealed bottle every time , it will grow weak over time .Also depending on the type of fire play your doing i use other forms  but for fire cupping and body contact type  the 70% is it .Another point no plastic or nylon s when making your torches .I have seen people make torches and use the wrong material and have it melt and scar the other person or even themselves by a molten goo comming off a newly made fire wand .

I've always found mine at the local grocery store, Safeway and Albertson's always has it in stock. Avoid the colored and scented alcohols, they don't work as well. Try not to let it sit around for too long either, once opened it seems to lose it's performance after some time.

Alcohol is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air.  That is why 100% or (200 proof) alcohol sold in stores.  Keeping it stored with a tight lid helps but only for so long.

Is there any particular reason you cannot just buy methylated spirits (close to 100% here) and then dilute it to the desired concentration with water?

70% by volume Isopropyl Alchohol is topical rubbing alchohol and found at the drug store.
75%-90% Methyl Alchohol (methanol, wood alchohol) is used for laquer thinner and found at the hardware store.
95% (190 proof) Ethyl Alchohol is found at the liquor store.  One brand is "Everclear".

95% Ethanol Flashpoint is 17degrees C
70% Isopropanol Flashpoint is 12 degrees C
90% Methanol Flashpoint is 11 degrees C
Now, the flashpoint of acetone is -18 degrees C

The Flash Point of a chemical is the lowest temperature at which a flame will propagate through the vapour of a combustible material to the liquid surface. Put more simply, it is the minimum temperature at which the liquid produces a sufficient concentration of vapour above it that it forms an ignitable mixture with air.

I would think for fire play, attention should be paid to the temperature of the flammable liquid used.  The higher the temperature, the faster the vapor is realeased and the greater the fuel/air mixture.  The higher the fuel/air mixture the hotter it will burn.

In practical application using 70% Isopropanol (rubbing alchohol)

If heated before use, you get a huge whoosh of flame that scorches hair.
If room temperature, you get a flame that gets to the boiling point in a minute or so and can cause blisters in a couple of minutes.
Chilled, the flame propagates slowly and the temperature stays tolerable longer.

(Yep, old science fair projects can have some uses)

Old magicians trick is to put chilled petrolatum on the palm and use chilled alchohol.  Pour a little puddle in the hand and you can carry a flame around for several minutes.  (Warning, trying this at home can lead to burned palms and flinging burning liquid until you get the hang of it.)

Now on to nitrocellulose...

Thinking pyro thoughts tonight,
Stefan

Zorro     I have always used the green and orange 70% alachol for fire play and eternal fire play . It gives off a wonderful smell and does not remind you of the Doctors office. I have never had a problem with the contents not acting corectley. as long as you use a new bottle. Once opened a bottle will last for about a week before you have to throw it away or use it for something else. But at the price (usually arround $ 1.08 a bottle) its really not a probblem. As far as the torch goes It is nice to make one for a demo or for a realy elaborat scene but when you want to play and for the time and money lets get pratical here people. get Q-tips that are made out of cardboard instead of plastic. Again a box of 500 is only $ 2.00 at any CVS or your nearest drug store. Apply with 100% cottonballs (not the polyester or nylon combo balls you can get in the makeup isle) Wear rubber gloves (for ease on your hands and faster to clean up. This will also stop the alachol from absorbing into your skin and seting you on fire)  Keep damp towel handy just in case a accident does happen and try not to play near carpet.

Bacardi 151 would be 75 percent. And you could use it for Pina Coladas afterwards.

eternal fire is a form of fire play. its a mix of wax and fire. without going into to much detail basically you turn a person into a human candle. when done correctley the person can stay on fire continusley for up to 45 minutes. its really nice to read a book by candle light expecially when the candle is a loved one. no wicks just add wax and 70% alachol set on fire and read. the peson feels nothing but warmth.
