I've come across mention in various stories, etc., of food that's suitable for people to eat but looks like and has the texture of pet food. Does anyone know where I might find such a product? It's my understanding that there's an actual product out there that is sold as pet food for people, if that makes sense.

I'm posting this in the Ask a Master column as well to reach double the audience.

One that some people use is this. Take a can of Alpo or other dog food and replace the contents with Dinty Moore beef stew. It is safe to eat and the slave will think it is real dog food...michael

I believe my Owner got something she used recently from Wallgreens, but I'm not 100% on that...  Basically, it's something that's pa ckaged as reindeer food for little kids.  It's packaged in a little red plastic pet dish and it looks just like kibble.

But it's cookies. :-D

We used it for pictures.  It turned out pretty well, because it does look like dog food and it tastes like cookies.  Yum.

There is nothing wrong with eating actual dog food. It might taste nasty if you get the wet kind but in reality the protine and vitamins in dog food is the same that humans have. It is a mental thing. the fact that its dog food is hard to get over. dog treats for example are nothing more then hard biscuts with different flavor added. Just for some thought.

But to answer your question No i have no idea where you would get such food. I like the idea of switching cans just take out the veggies when you do.

It's true, good quality dogfood is safe for humans... and if you're buying your dogs something that's not, you may want to consider a change in brand. :)

Howver, the can-switching is something I've always liked the idea of.  I don't know how many times I'd have to make a sub brush their teeth after eating dog food even though I know it's fine...  just the idea of it...

Dear Raivin, Ladies and Gentlemen;

For me, I prefer using human food and repackage it in animal pet product cans.

I've used meatloaf and packed in ALPO cans, after washing them out and boiling them.  I have also gone through the trouble of baking cookies with a dog bone 8==8 shape, take a rubber stamp and put Hugs Bones like Milkbone would be.  I like slaves to keep their teeth and not chip on hard bones.  I also wrap soft taco shell with a bit of meat to give it flavor and wrap.  It does look like a chew toy.

It really is a matter of style and how much you want to make an effort to convert human like food into pup/dawg food containers as to give that person the closest thing to being a critter as possible.

For me, it is the fun of creativity, just as much as a dawg/pup trying to puppy eye themselves into getting food and treats.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

Canned corn beef hash also looks significantly like dog food and you might like to try that.

Served at room temperature, it tastes something like dog food, too!

One thing about the real dog food, should you go that route: Some brands add dewormer to their foods. You probably want to avoid that. Most doggie meds are not good for humans.

We make about 1/2 of our own pet food ... most things cooked and pureed would look like canned food.  And making dog-biscuit shaped cookies is always a cool idea.

dog food is not suitable for human consumption

the ingrediants used for pet foods are deemed to be subpar & not suitable for human consumption. There have been many many claims over the years of illness & even death of pets with suspecion that they became ill because of the foods.

There was a huge news story recently where this was pretty much proven & massive recalls followed.

Did anyone hear about the story where one manufacturing plant for pet foods was using the carcases of dead dogs gathered from the pounds after they had been euthanized & using them in the mix?

The live stock brought into these plants are already dead, been dead for god only knows how long or are dying from unknown reasons. "Meat by products"  is another word you should really look into. There are so many terms you should be aware of on  ingediants lists. Other terms such as  4-D livestock which breaks down to mean: dead, disabled , deseased & dying. You can fill a cargo container much fuller when you stack your freight on top of other frieght & go to the top of the container with it all. Live animals require air space to move around & cows aren't know for giving each other piggy back rides.... neither are pigs.

Even the grains used are not suitable for human consumption. Come on people... do your research. Most pet owners won't even feed that crap to their 4 legged pets much less those who walk around on 2 legs.

Get yourself a food processor & puree a steak or something.

I used to eat Milk Bones, but Mistress made stop because I kept falling off the couch when I tried to lick myself!  Plus, I had the growing urge to chase cars.  Mistress was worried I was going to get hit in the middle of the highway.  On the bright side, my coat was never shinier and my breath was always fresh.

Something that I just remembered from our research about food for our dogs (that led to us starting to switch over to a home-made food diet) ...

There is an acceptable level of rat feces in all pet foods that is not allowed in human food.  So think about that when  you are feeding that to anything - you are feeding them up to (I think) 10% rat dung.

(Edited...sorry, the page linked to stuff from leatherdog.com, who's page isn't up any longer.)

Ok, Here's a page of recipes. It's a non kink site and the recipes are for actual dogs, but they all have 'human' ingredients.
http://www.bullwrinkle.com/Assets/Recipes/Recipes.htm

And another:
http://homemade-dog-treat-recipes.com/

I found this by googling "homemade dog treats". There's lots.

Also, there's an interesting documentary featuring my friend/guru Master Skip and his Pup, Tim.

Absolutely not,  one of the biggest risks is salmonella poisoning  because a dogs digestive tracts are shorter than  humans they can handle higher levels of salmonella  that is often found  4D meats which is unfit for human consumption and is used instead for dog food, cooking/baking the kibble does not kill so high levels can be found in petfoods that do not use human grade meats

most dog foods are not even fit for dogs and can lead to a myriad of health problems including diabetes, seizures, liver and kidney disease, arthritis, immune diseases etc and are causing cancers due to euthansia drugs from the meats used and additives  which are often  banned from  human food use.

If you want to feed a dog food to a human use only holistic type dog foods as they are made from human grade ingredients only and the only place to find these foods are in small pet stores or feed stores , even petco or petsmart does not  carry a holistic food.

Examples of such brands are Canidae, EVO, eagle pack, go natural, orijen, artemis, California Naturals, Earth blend, fromms, evangers,  Innova,  Merrick,  natures variety , Natures Logic, Premium edge, Solid Gold, timber wolf organics,  wellness, wysong

Maybe you haven't been to PetSmart for awhile, but the one by us carries 3 different holistic foods ...
