Am I the only one having deja-vu here? Don't we have this conversation like once every three months on this very same board?
Allow me to sum up for your convenience:
Dems arent happy unless they are bleeding and Republicans have so numbed themselves to reality they dont even know what they are feeling any more and Popeye smokes too many cigarettes and drinks too much coffee.
There.
Next topic, please.

Insert blushing smiley here.
Thank you.

That's really generalizing a bit, I fear.  But, even if that were true in general...that Democrats view themselves as "victims" and Republicans want to be seen as more "self-sufficient....and I'm NOT saying it is.......having mental health issues doesn't make one a "victim."  Admitting that you have such issues doesn't mean you're not "self-sufficient."

Agreed.  We are discussing self-perception and self-image here.  38% to 58% (or something like that...  It's been the kind of day that leads to a whiskey kind of night).  I imagine an actual number would be a dead heat (if not skewed the other way).

The victim mentality has very much been a Democrat target though.  Hell, John Edwards is hoping to sneak in to the nomination on it, with his "two America's" approach.

Well, knowing that Matt and Trey have called Cartman,a version of "Archie Bunker",I`d have to agree with you.

Sanity -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (11/30/2007 9:52:40 PM)

Oh, I am prejudiced towards the news, and I'll readily admit it. And of course they are selective news bits - I noticed that the forums were moving a little more slowly than usual and so I picked out three stories that I thought had the potential to get things moving along a little bit. Two of them took off, one floundered, so in all it was a success.

And I really don't mean to piss you or anyone else off. I might have an acid tongue sometimes, and maybe I don't know how much some people can take offense, but I try to be aware. I try to be more aware, as that isn't my goal here, pissing people off. I mean, really pissing them off.

It's good to get your blood moving sometimes though, and it's good to be made to think. And it's fun to have the upper hand in a debate, too. So what if Conservatives report better mental health - don't Liberals have things in their favor? Other polls, or whatever? I'm always seeing certain Left-leaning Joe Shmoes crowing about this poll or that. Well I saw this and decided that maybe this was my turn to crow... or get out my bottle of Elmer's, or whatever.

Just a little fun, that's all, just a little bit.

I never get upset over this forum anymore... a few times in the past I have, but I can tell you that when I took my hiatus I fell in love with life and I am one of the happiest people I know...

There is nothing you could say that could remotely upset my rose colored world view sweety.. not that you were trying to... I just find your selective news bits entertaining... not that you are prejudiced or anything[;)]

You never watch South Park, do you?

Here - read this:

http://www.manhattan-institute.org/html/_dmn_southpark_reps.htm

I don't agree with every angle they present, but I usually laugh pretty hard. And by the way, I watched "All In The Family" as a kid, growing up. And M*A*S*H, and all that other extremely Liberal fare, and guess what?

I still turned out okay! Despite all of it...

They skewer everybody.No one`s safe.he-he
The bust the hippies, and the hippie haters.

Matt and Trey, transcend everything and everybody.

I had seen South Park a couple times and wasn`t impressed.
It wasn`t till I read a conservative newspaper Op/Ed, railing on them and blaming them for kids committing suicide and other non-sense like that, that I watched again, and started to get it.

I`ve enjoyed South Park, from alien probes and talking poo,all the way to " Man-bear-pig" and Tom Cruze in the closet. And I always have plenty of fresh towels.

Come to think of it Lefties don't seem to be very happy people.
They're always "unhappy about"... this or that and they always seem to be yelling at people!
Oh, and they always seem to be "offended" about something that someone's said or done. lol
And, they always seem to "care" about issues that not a lot of other people care about. They probably feel lonely a lot and that's not good for anyone's mental health.
And they seem to have a lot of mental health "issues" on the Left.
Now, most Liberals I know are pretty well adjusted people and they seem to be fairly happy.
I get along well with Liberals but not with Lefties. They think I'm a Righty. They think everyone's a Righty.
Same thing with Righties, they're just too far off the scale for my "mental health." They think I'm a Lefty. They think everyone's a Lefty.
Sometimes it hard to tell Lefties and Righties apart.
I get along well with Conservatives too. They also seem to be well adjusted and happy just like Liberals.
It's nice being a Moderate though.
I'm pretty happy and my mental health is pretty good, no psychosis like a lot of Lefties and Liberals and Conservatives like us and our vote is HIGHLY sought after!
And, being a Moderate or "Independant" doesn't "anchor" us to any "philosophys", we can more or less pick and choose the issues which make us happy and that's not a strain on our mental health.
I find that Liberals and Conservatives have more in common than they realise.
And I think it's better for my mental health to avoid Lefties and Rightys who each think I'm in the opposite camp!

Whatever Republicans may think of themselves, or decide is useful to say in a informal and unscientific survey, real studies indicate otherwise.

See, for example, "Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition," by John T. Jost et al. Psychological Bulletin, 2003, Vo. 129, No. 3, 339-375.

Oh God, please don't complicate this chatterfest with scientific inquiry.

Yes, I read that article the last time this ignorant shit came up....and didn't it say that their bliss peaked equally when in the immediate vicinity of men's bathrooms and when contriving bills designed to defeat any gay sociatal advances?

quote:

As the show's co-creator, Matt Stone, sums it up: "I hate conservatives, but I really fucking hate liberals."[3]
In August 2006 Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Andrew Sullivan headlined a conference in Amsterdam hosted by the libertarian monthly magazine Reason. During an on-stage interview with Reason editors Nick Gillespie and Jesse Walker, Stone and Parker reaffirmed their discomfort with labels while acknowledging that their political views could be described most accurately as libertarian. John Tierney documented the declaration on the pages of the New York Times a few days later in a column called South Park Refugees.[4] "South Park Libertarians," an edited version of the interview, appeared in the December 2006 issue of Reason.[4]

[edit] Creators' views
Both Parker and Stone have claimed that the "South Park Republican" tag was a "dumb notion."[5] However, when Parker was asked to elaborate on what the terms means to him, he claimed that he is getting "sick" of the fact that one must "either like Michael Moore or... wanna fuckin' go overseas and shoot Iraqis." He goes on to stress the lack of a "middle ground," where they consider themselves, and mentions that "if you think Michael Moore's full of shit, then you are a super-Christian right-wing whatever."
They are simply not fans of extremists, and enjoy "roasting" those on each side. "We find just as many things to rip on the left as we do on the right," Parker claimed. "People on the far left and the far right are the same exact person to us." In summary, Parker states, "George Bush doesn't know what's going on. Michael Moore does not know what's going on. And Alec Baldwin definitely does not know what's going on."[6]

Interesting, vedddy interesting. [:D]

Hey - don't shoot the messenger here

No chance.  This is an interesting poll.  I'm not going to weigh in politically here.  I merely wanted to point something out.  These results aren't reporting what people's ACTUAL mental health IS.  People SELF-REPORTED on what their mental health is.  There are raging paranoid schizophrenics, for instance, who would self report that they are fine and have no paranoia, delusions, or mental health issues at all.  That doesn't mean they don't.[;)]

The same could apply here.  It's not that Republicans necessarily HAVE better mental health.  It could possibly be that they only SELF-REPORT better mental health.  Big difference.  The reasons why one would not report real mental health issues are diverse, I'm sure.  There's still alot of stigma attached to lots of disorders.

Just food for thought.  Don't shoot me, either, Sanity.  Glad to see you back posting more regularly[:)]................luci

This is a good point and was my first thought when I read this. In fact it could be interpreted that Democrats are more SELF-AWARE and HONEST than Republicans because the actual rate of those with mental health issues is the same.

C'mon people do you really think that ones mental health has anything to do with political views?

Sanity -> RE: Republicans Report Much Better Mental Health Than Others (12/1/2007 6:44:45 AM)

Losing to Bush effected certain people drastically. Then all the hype and fomenting of hatred etc made things even worse.
