when i am in my house, i feel sexy. in my bedroom, i feel very sexy. in the hard ware store, i feel sexy and filled with naughty thoughts... so why do i still feel unsexy about going into a sex shoppe? what is it about a wall of phallic toys that still makes me on edge? is it possible to feel like yourself and still buy a butt plug in public? or are sun glasses and a trench coat just required? just random thoughts- phoenix

Perhaps it is the stygma of being seen buying a sex toy. I know for me, it took getting over that stygma to feel like myself in a sex shop. It also took recognizing that everyone that sees you shopping in one is also shopping in one and judging you is like glass houses and stones. Luckily there is a chain of shops near me that have really done their best to break the stygma. The staff is very friendly, extremely knowledgable and make it a point to give a friendly hello to everyone that enters the store as if the shop sold anything but sex toys. It's kinda funny, but I feel more uncomfortable down at the hardware store checking out with a pile of items that couldn't possibly be explained as some mundane project (chains, eye bolts, etc.). I guess it is because at the harware store I'm hiding something (the fact that I'm about to build some form of sex furniture) and at the sex shop, I have nothing to hide.

But then there's the Internet and the mail, with the plain wrapper... I don't need to suffer the indignity of the sex shop any longer!
A lot of sex toy shops are really sleazy and have really tacky stock. Go somewhere else and that might be better. I like the boutique full of lingerie with strippers on staff who are very matter of fact. Or maybe they really are sorority girls? Anyway, it beats the place full of porn magazines that hasn't been vacuumed in ten years.

Hubby and I shop at sex shops all the time- when we travel, we buy a toy in that city as a souvenir...way cooler than a tee-shirt! There's a great appointment only shop in Las Vegas where they only let one client in at a time, and you get on on one assistance, and they don't mind if you go in there as a D/s couple, meaning it's OK to talk, try on clothes and step out of the dressing room, etc. That was a very HOT and deliciously embarrassing experience for me.

Just think- the person at the counter sells this stuff ALL DAY LONG, and has sold butt plugs to countless others.

This reminds me of a funny story though...

When I lived in the Bay Area, I lived/worked downtown, and right next store to my work was a sex shop and my co-workers and I would be standing outside having a smoke, and would have all sorts of fun torturing the guys who came out of the store. We'd say stuff like, "Hey, whatcha got in that discrete blue bag? A Good Housekeeping magazine?" Thinking back, that was probably kind of dangerous.

Too many times to count, we got free shows. My desk was in the front window, and dudes would flash us. One time a guy spanked it in front of about 5 of us...too funny!

We also had lots of drunk bums that would pee, and be so bombed they didn't realize they were doing it in front of an office window.

Working there was a true freak-a-go-go show.
