Level -> One million dollars a minute (12/3/2007 3:49:49 AM)

quote:

Like a ticking time bomb, the national debt is an explosion waiting to happen. It's expanding by about $1.4 billion a day — or nearly $1 million a minute.

What's that mean to you?

It means almost $30,000 in debt for each man, woman, child and infant in the United States.

Even if you've escaped the recent housing and credit crunches and are coping with rising fuel prices, you may still be headed for economic misery, along with the rest of the country. That's because the government is fast straining resources needed to meet interest payments on the national debt, which stands at a mind-numbing $9.13 trillion.

And like homeowners who took out adjustable-rate mortgages, the government faces the prospect of seeing this debt — now at relatively low interest rates — rolling over to higher rates, multiplying the financial pain.

So long as somebody is willing to keep loaning the U.S. government money, the debt is largely out of sight, out of mind.

Or you can have Democrats endeavor to point out that Bush is the cause of it all. Either way, if this left vs right blame-game nonsense continues, we're not likely to see any improvement.

That`s not necessary, history will tell the story.

Nixon was the last republican that was even  fiscal conservative in recent history.

Notice that the red lines correspond to  Reagan  and Bush.

The blue, with Clinton ,Carter and Kennedy.

Debt counts.Debt is serious.Debt also, couldn`t care less about the right or left. This isn`t about right or left,it`s about hole we are all in,that we`ll have to pay to get out of.

You`re right though,we shouldn`t get involved in accountability and responsibility. That`s for political wanks.

Instead, vote for the guy who makes the debt go down, and not up,and ignore the labels.

Fingerpointing's all well and good.  I'll suggest that the two Iraq wars, coupled with Reaganomics were to blame; one could argue that Republicans are more likely to go to war (after all, Republicans are more likely to be in bed with defense contractors, no?)

Either way, imagine if every US man woman and child had a credit card with a $50,000 limit.  How much do you think every man woman and child spend, before they started to really pay it back?  You got it; $50,001.

The biggest joke is the way some people bandy the word 'surplus' around.  The suggestion is that for one year, we spend a little less than we bring in, we have a surplus, right?  I wish I could approach the credit card debt in my house that way.  I can picture it now...

"Look honey!  We have enough money that we could pay more than just the interest back!!  Lets go on a shopping spree!!"

"I place economy among the first and most important republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt."                                Thomas Jefferson, third US president, architect and author (1743-1826)

Yup, they need to stop spending.
On things like having Troops in 130 countries or however many.
On a bloated State Dept.
On "foreign aid."
