I have journalled at different times in my life but my interest in doing it kind of ebbs and flows. Sometimes I enter faithfully....and then months will go by leaving large gaps.

My girlfriend who passed away yesterday was much more dilligent in her efforts at journalling than I. For the last several years she has pretty religiously recorded her thoughts and experiences. It's not something that I have accessed often. Sure there are times when she has said "hey, you've got to check out what I added to my journal today"...usually it was something humorous...so I would go look.

Today I sat and read it all. What an amazing trip down memory lane! A record of many of the times we shared together, parties we attended, Holidays, tears we shared. Many things that I had forgotten. I went through the entire gamut of emotion as I read her words. I laughed...really laughed....and I cried...and cried. A few years ago she had added one of those silly questionairres where you fill out the questions. One of the questions was "Do you have a real friend?" She listed her Master....and me. While parts of it ripped at my heart and were difficult at this time, I am so thankful for this amazing gift she has left us. I believe that I am going to look differently now upon writing in my own journal.

Hey Erin,

I've journaled extensively in my adult life, a habit I picked up in my first stint of college, and now for my family (especially the UM's) to have to read when they're adults. I would have loved something like that from my grandmothers (or even earlier ancestors). It's an important link to the generations, to friends and to loved ones. I hope you find comfort in your girlfriend's words and thoughts. I wish you well through this process.

hello erin

,I appreciate im a stranger to you and others here,  ive read the forums on a daily basis for a quite a few months now and sort of got to know a few of you guys from a  distance, I found your post on the loss of your friend  very saddening and really felt for both you and your friends Master.
Today I talked on your loss with a very good slave friend of mine and for a few moments we reflected on the sadness both you and your friends Master must be feeling just now.... our thoughts were with you and He.

I recall asking my Mother years ago as a teenage boy if we ever get over the loss of loved ones....she reflected a moment then replied....no son ,you never get over the loss you just learn to live with the loss and in time the sadness fades and is replaced with a variety of memories of those special to us that will give mixed emotions of joy, laughter and sadness throughout our lives........now my Mother has passed on and a few others, i now know how true her words really were.

the diary your friend left behind is a gift that both you and her Master will cherish for always and when the sadness fades it will be a key to all those happy/sad/laughing moments you shared with a close friend ,but above all else you will always have the gift of your memories of a friend living inside you.

I wish you, your friends Master and her family peace and strenth in the times ahead

be well

Thank you. I never realized the impact that it could have until today. I know that I am going to be placing more importance on writing in mine.

I think your Mother was quite right, thank you.

Assuming it's the person I'm thinking of, I read of her passing on one of the local lists.  I was saddened by it very much especially given her youth.  I didn't know her but she's family in the sense of being a member of the local community.  My sympathies to you as her friend.

I've been keeping a journal for years now and it mostly contains memes and humorous entries with a few more serious notes and essays along the way.

As a historian, I recognize the value it holds to those who may read it in the future.  While my stepson and neice and nephew will (hopefully) get a great chance to know me and learn about me over the next (hopefully, again) 50 or so years, their children and grandchildren may not.  I hope that by leaving a written record of my thoughts and humorous tidbits may help them understand me a little better and maybe themselves.  One of the critical things is to make sure I transfer it to the permanent medium, paper and ink, regularly lest it get lost in the internet ether.

It's a great way to relate to the present and to the future.

I journal as well, but I'm not really sure that I comfortable with anyone else reading it.  Mine is a diary of my deepest thoughts, many are good and humorous but some can be very dark.  It is a good think for me as I am a very reflective person and think on such things a lot.  It forces me to put those thoughts into words and gives me opportunity to look back upon them at a later date.

It a blessed gift for someone to share their inner self with you in such a way.  Treasure the memories she has given you.
