So have you seen it?  Are you watching it?  Do you hate it? Who knows how many parts there are?

sappatoti -> RE: Tin Man - It Ain't The Wizard Of Oz (12/4/2007 3:50:20 AM)

I've attempted to watch it thus far, but between being overly tired and my headaches, I'm only able to catch bits and pieces of it. Luckily, Sci-Fi's been running each segment three times in a row each night, allowing me to catch enough bits, although out of sequence, to figure out what's generally going on. I don't know how many segments there are in total, but tonight, Tuesday, will be the third two-hour segment.

As far as I can tell, Tin Man has as much in common with The Wizard of Oz as the original Tim Burton Batman movie has with the 1960s campy TV show... if even that. There are vague references between the original's and this mini-series' characters in name or quantity only, such as four people searching for things, one evil woman and her minions, the land of the Outer Zone (OZ), but other than that, the plot really has nothing in common.

I cannot be sure of this, but I believe this Tin Man series is a take-off of a comic book series of the same name. I'm not a comic book fan, so I've not taken the time to research that aspect of it.

I do like the characterizations in Tin Man, but only because they seem to be developed to fit the video/film form of entertainment better than the original characters, which seemed to me to be an attempt to faithfully recreate those of the book form.

I'm giving it a thumbs-up because I like strange and twisted recreations from original ideas. Those who think The Wizard of Oz is something that shouldn't be messed with probably won't like this series.

RazorJAK -> RE: Tin Man - It Ain't The Wizard Of Oz (12/4/2007 4:07:08 AM)

There are three parts to the mini series.  I spent the entire first installment just RIPPING it apart.  To me,  it's like a lot of things that Sci Fi shits onto the small screen.  It's visually amazing.  It's stunning and pretty and lovely.  But it's still nothing but a gilded turd.

I'm begrudgingly watching the entire thing solely because I've done my best to see or read every adaptation of L. Frank Baum's work that I can get my hands on.  Be it the "Wizard of Oz",  "The Wiz", the silent films based on the early books of the series ( of which I've managed to find a couple on DVD ) and even the anime Oz no Mahōtsukai which ran the gamut of the original stories of Dorothy Gale onto Ozma and beyond.

I have to hand it to SciFi.  They've managed to find an adaptation of the storyline which I dislike even more than "Wicked".

EDIT:  And SWEET BLACK FORNICATING JESUS!!!  Could they have at least picked an actress who has a wider range of expression than various forms of bewilderment?  She spends the entire series looking like she's undergone multiple trepanations.  It's the same expression she used throughout all of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

Seriously,  Zooey Deschanel is probably the only actor or actress in Hollywood that has less range than Keanu Reeves!

i'm sure you didn't mean keanu reeves, more like the walking talking cardboard kevin costner!! [:D]

carlie310 -> RE: Tin Man - It Ain't The Wizard Of Oz (12/4/2007 9:15:07 AM)

FR--I missed all the hype (don't have Sci-Fi), so I'm glad to hear that it isn't great.  I actually found out about this yesterday, because my UM is reading the series of books right now.  We have a number of them from printings in mid 40s or so (sounds like a gold mine, until you realize that each of these books was read many times by many children, now into the 3rd generation).  I read around a website to figure out the earliest book she missed, and spent a chunk of yesterday mindlessly formatting the .txt file of The Patchwork Girl of Oz to be easier on the eyes. (Doesn't have the O'Neill illustrations, which we'll miss, but we're going to order the book used.)

As a fan of the 1939 movie (before video, Hollywood used to release record albums with not just soundtrack but also dialogue, and I have the lines memorized from mine), I think I would have been disappointed.

I'm always entertained to notice synchronicity in entirely separate aspects of my life--books for my ums referenced on CM.  Who'd've thunk.

Nope,  I most certainly DID mean Keanu Reeves.  Hard as it is to believe given how hamfisted Kevin mangles most of the roles he gets his hands on ... Reeves is an even WORSE actor than Costner.

I've had more than a handful of stage roles.  The acting troupe I was a member of used to have a drinking game involving Reeves movies:

He dropped accent.... Drink!
He ALMOST showed emotion ... Drink!
You can see the "What the fuck are you doing in this industry?" expression on his costars who are far more talented than him.  .... DRINK!

We can usually only get through 1/2 of "Devil's Advocate" before most of us are on the floor passed out.

From what I have watched/seen so far, I like it.

sappatoti -> RE: Tin Man - It Ain't The Wizard Of Oz (12/4/2007 8:10:31 PM)

It's over... it's done... wasn't that fun...

I won't spoil it for those who've not yet seen it but wish to. Sci-Fi will run the series, front to back, starting at 5 PM Eastern time this coming Sunday, 12/9.

This line in your post reduces the rest to a steaming lump of shit.
Wicked, The story from the wicked witchs point of view, was the best adaptation, of any "Oz" tale yet, bar none including the original Judy Garland version.

sexyone4you -> RE: Tin Man - It Ain't The Wizard Of Oz (12/4/2007 10:34:05 PM)

I enjoy the series.  It's not the BEST thing I have ever seen, but I was mad that I missed the 3rd episode in the series.

Btw, I did both see & read Wicked & enjoyed it thoroughly. (Sorry, RazorJak, but I'm with you on Keanu Reeves [;)])

RazorJAK -> RE: Tin Man - It Ain't The Wizard Of Oz (12/4/2007 10:35:08 PM)

For startes,  the version which Judy Garland starred in wasn't the original.  It's simply the best known.

As to my dislike of "Wicked" ... I need to clarify that statement.  I'm referring to the musical;  which really has almost nothing to do with the novel other than the title and the fact that Glinda and Elphaba were roomies in college.

I didn't mind the novel,  "Wicked".  But really didn't think too highly of it's sequel.  I'd most likely have thought more of the series if I was a fan of the "told from the Villain's point of view" genre.  Honestly the only one of that ilk which I enjoyed thoroughly was "Grendel" (no,  not the comic.).

osocurious -> RE: Tin Man - It Ain't The Wizard Of Oz (12/5/2007 8:09:47 AM)

personally ..... I was expecting A LOT More from Tin Man.
I'm certain that I'm a prime example of what TV "Hype" is supposed to accomplish, but sadly ... You get Sooooo hyped up ... Expect Soooooo MUCH ... that it's just about impossible to NOT be disappointed once you actually see the program.

recovering from the "hyped up" disappointment ... and thinking about it now ...
Tin Man was Ok ... Not the best thing I've ever seen ... Definitely not the worst.

respectfully

I didn't like DG's attitude at first.  It ruined it for Me.  But once the story started unfolding, it was interesting the way they kept referring to the other Wizard of Oz story.  It was and wasn't.  Strange, that's for sure.  But all triumped in the end.  Good won over evil once more.

LeMis -> RE: Tin Man - It Ain't The Wizard Of Oz (12/5/2007 4:34:42 PM)

I never saw the TV hyped up commercials for Tin Man so that may be one thing in my favor, I have to agree with the others though.  It wasn't the best thing on TV but it wasn't the worst either.
