You know, I've been sitting at work all morning thinking about it, and I was wondering what percentage of the D/s, BDSM, bondage and general alternative lifestyle community identify with "nerdy" interests -- technology, fantasy, sci-fi, anime, comics, video games, etc etc etc.

I've personally found the number of people in the lifestyle who do enjoy it to be relatively high compared to other "sub-cultures."

What do the rest of you all think?

I'm into some of that... tech, sci fi/fantasy, and some gaming.

Well, I, for one, certainly have no interest whatsoever in anime.  Erm.. excuse me, as I quickly change my avi... :P

Anime seems to be big with highschool and college students.  Well, it was at first, then some of those people grew up.. new highschool students are probably also interested, but those former college students are now young adults, and seemingly still interested.

Hah, oh, Karana!  Back about seven years ago, I was going to this military academy.  Partially as an excuse to get away from campus for a while, I joined the church group, who were allowed to leave every other Sunday for a mass (a one to two hour long Catholic service).  Anyhow, one service, this girl sat down next to me.  And started vibrating.  At a time when I was still Catholic and oblivous to the fact that girls masturbate, too.  (Not entirely relevant to my point here, but, hey, I enjoy recollecting on how naive I was.. it's comforting to remember that I didn't always have to live with the burden of responsibility.)

Anyhow, she later was my girlfriend off-campus.  And she loved anime.  She gave me a portfolio full of "Dragon Ball Z" hentai, which she had apparently trained herself to draw, but she drew our heads onto the characters' bodies.  Oh, my.  In ways, I so miss olden days.

Couldn't tell you for certain, but the two certainly seem to correlate, that's for sure.  Hah, it wasn't until I joined the Science Fiction and Fantasy guild down at my college that I started to meet other kinky people, which was a surprise, if a welcome one!  And, really, just wander around at an anime con.  The number of collars and leashes you see there is rather heartening.  *Laugh*

LOL! There`s a scifi/fantasy/anime/uhm..../whathaveyou convention round here called CONvergence, and up until I think year before last they had an entire BDSM hotel floor. Rather blatant correlation, if you ask me.

Hmmm... Minnesota, is it?  This looks like a job for... a ROAD TRIP!  *Grin*  Actually, I heard rumor of a BDSM/Sci-fi convention down in Atlanta, as well, called Frolicon.  Sounds like either one'd be a good time!

Come on over! It`s a good fricken time! This year is the 10th anniversary soooo it`s a FOUR day convention! Do you know how much booze I`m gonna have to buy? Lol

You should check out Anime Reactor if you`re more of just an anime/BDSM geek. They go 18+ after a certain time in the evening.

P.S. You suck for getting to play Rock Band before me.

Hah, yeah.  It's been years since I've heard from her, but some family's told me that she's going to an art trade school right now.  I guess it was unavoidable that she'd pursue her drawing and love of drawing.

And her obsession with DBZ.

You know us fangirls. We`ll do anything (including spend thousands on tuition) for a career we love!

And our obsessions with DBZ.

Ooh.  Four day convention.  I wonder if that can be measured in "Bottles of Mead".... *Snickers*

Hm.  Y'know, I can't actually find any record of an Anime Reactor past 2004.  Looks like the web site they're supposedly at is even gone, so I don't know what to tell ya about that one.

*Grin*  And that would be the advantage of having friends who buy almost every game as soon as it comes out.  It's a great time, especially for parties!  Although, in my PERSONAL opinion, the track list leaves a lot to be desired.  Still, I'm sure they'll get the good downloadable ones up there soon enough.  If you get the chance.... plaaaaay iiiiit....

It can be measured in mead, and it hopefully will. Or, in the very least, bottles of Captain. :D
Sorry, Anime Reactor has actually changed it`s name to The Reactor (just to fuck with me.) http://www.the-reactor.org/programming.php

You`d better believe if I get the chance, that bass is aaaaaaall miiiine. *hoard* It took my buddy Andrew a LONG time to get my grubby little geek fingers off his Guitar Hero. So hopefully he buys this one and lets me get my germs on it, too.

Meh. Though I won`t deny that a schoolgirl-esque giggle wells up everytime I watch Gundam Wing, I pretty much grew out of my yaoi obsession after I started watching Loveless. I became indefinitely alienated from the rest of my yaoi-loving friends because of my inability to accept that it`s cute for a grown man to ask a 12 year old boy for "Corporal Punishment". Go figure.

Noted and bookmarked for poking around at once they put up their 2008 schedule.  *Nod*

Heh, video game leeching... what else are friends for?  Then again, nobody wanted to play bass in my group for some reason, so maybe you'll have an uncontested spot there!

I think it goes a bit deeper than that: Folks who are into BDSM, tech, robo, ren faires, (take your pick of subcultures) seem to be personality types that are heavily fantasy/imagination driven. Either this imagination is of an erotic nature, or of living some sort of "alternate life" to the workaday world.

And in America, having an imagination, or being artistically inclined, is often considered something of a birth defect. So, we band together with like minded others... minority communities of shared passions.

There's a lot of crossovers in the various fandoms and communities, simply because, when you start questioning the mainstream, you find yourself finding all sorts of pathways to follow, to explore, and to absorb into your essential self.

I don't know who had the quote by Margret Cho, (it shows up as someone's sig line on here) but it was something to the effect of her trying to figure out the weird connection between BDSM, Star Trek, and the Ren Faire. Closer to reality than you might think.

Technology: More toys and torture devices. Bug Zappers are fun.

Fantasy: Most of our fantasy villians tend to be sadistic and enjoy to torture and inflict pain. Let's remember the original stories of Grims Fairy Tales. Also, Anne Rice did a version of Sleeping Beauty after she awoke.

Sci Fi: Gor, need I say more? How about the Mind Fucking that Event Horizon has? Sci Fi horror character Pin Head seems to have a sadistic streak.

Anime: We have movies like "Legend of The Overfiend" for a reason. Henti with BDSM is fun to read.

Comics: Wonder Woman has one interesting weakness. All you have to do is make both barcelets touch and she's all yours. Wonder Woman has been subjected to alot of bondage over the years of her comic book life span.

Video games: Games such as Grand Theft Auto can be an outlet for people with frustration and a twisted side. We can now get a little freaky with games such as The Sims.

RPG's table top or LARP are also interesting. It can help with creativity and bring out some naughty thoughts.

Yeah, I'm a kinky freaky geek. So sue me.

Damn, thanks for the info!  Got my hotel reservations (near the convention) made!  That's a great list of authors - two of my faves will be there.

I found that being big into anime made me unique in the bdsm world....amoung younger people in the lifestyle its more common.  But yong people are more open minded at an earlier age....there are older folks that are getting into it as well.

Anime is never a kids thing....Walt Disney showed us years ago that animated films and shows can be just a good live action ones.  It all depends upon the story.   Just like role playing....most get into it in college....the ones that had good stories in their groups long for those days again.  Its like reading a good book...some want o read it...others wish to view it....others wish to play a part in it.
