If you are like me in the UK and abhorr the amount of advertising and other junk mail filling up your snail mail post box, go to this site and register to get your address of the mailing companies lists;

Not surprised really, it has just been on tv how to stop it.

I find it quite amusing that the only service that seems to claim it can significantly reduce the amount of junk email is one that's been owned and operated by an organization who's lifeblood is in direct marketing.

Here's the last line of the site's Privacy Policy:

The Mailing Preference Service is a service run by The Direct Marketing Association (UK) Limited

Does anyone else see the irony in this?

Personally I strip out my information and send the rest of the crap back to them in the free envelopes provided. Oh the fun of sending MBNA crap from Barclaycard and Barclaycard crap from American Express. Hours of fun and it keeps those postmen in business.

Junk mail is the prime constituent of my bin, unsolicited rubbish I do not want. as to the MPS being owned by the advertising people, it would have been nice if they could have consulted me first about receiving junk mail.
