Is it just me, or is everyone's spell check either broken or Ebonics is the official language here?

Now, don't get me wrong, because I know we type fast, don't proof and make errors, especially me.

However, when I read a post that goes something like this...I can't help but say WTF?

I whish Mastur wuld luve me for me and not make mi do things that I wuldnt make a dog dew. Cause I luv him, despit the flee colar he put on me.

Geez.....That's my rant and I'll never bring this sub ject UP again...unless my spell check brakes....LOL...spellcheck missed that one!

For some here English is not their first language... I cut them some slack.

This topic has been beaten to death. Teenagers graduate from high school not being able to read or write effectively. It is a tragic failing of our school systems. I am not the greatest writer to ever grace these forums, nor am I a slouch at it either. I don't badger others about mistakes because I am sure that I make them as well. Normally I just roll my eyes and read on.

Perhaps you might want to search for the Grammar Nazi topic that was posted a while ago. Many people, from both sides, weighed in on that discussion.

I don't use 'spell check' unless I am unsure of how to spell a particular word. I very rarely err when it comes to grammar and spelling. However when I find a post that contains an error I will edit the post.

I don't get off on telling others how to type on a public forum. I'm not the Grammar or Spelling police. However I do require people to spell check and grammar check their emails to me. I don't want to read something that's been slapped together haphazardly, by someone either too lazy or too careless to invest an extra minute or two to check their email. I make exceptions for those who do not speak English as their first language.

Well, first off, thank you both for weighing in.
Secondly, If I was to criticize a person, I would do it after a bad post, not by starting a new thread.
Lastly, It was to bring a laugh and a smile to both of you and whoever else reads this.

So, go Fuk urself

You asked a question. You received two answers.

Is your reply meant to be humorous - or had you been asking a rhetorical question, and are now peeved that you've gotten replies?

It's hard to convey an emotion through textual representation, so I'm trying to figure out if I've managed to offend you by replying.

My reply box doesn't have a spell check option(or maybe I missed it?) I do try to look over my posts. Lucky me, I graduated from a private school.

It makes me twitch to read posts like that. But I try to be nice instead of correcting their mistakes like some sort of English teacher on steriods. Besides, English isn't everyone's first language. I'm sure many here graduated from high school before it was mandatory to take a typing class as well.

I've gotten several e-mails from people in Romania whose English vocabulary was mostly made up of dirty talk. Haha.

Oh well it only reminds me of how stupid I must sound when I speak/type in Spanish.

psst--yay for having a sense of humor!

It irks me when people don't spell properly, but I try to cut them some slack if it's only a couple of errors. If it's egregious, then I just roll my eyes and go on. Gauge is right, though, there are a LOT of people on the site that speak english as a second language. You have to give them credit for trying.

That is the first thing I check when I see a message with multiple misspellings. Not that I care particularly about spelling, but it does make me defensive of them if they draw criticism.

About the only grammar/spelling issue I worry about is when people commit all too common errors such as using the word "dominate" when they mean "dominant", or when they use the word "discrete" when they mean "discreet".

Those two problems need to be mentioned, because people won't know they are misusing the words unless someone points it out to them.

Agreed. I also see a difference between typos and consistent lack of spelling/grammar abilities. I typo probably at least one post a day, and don't let it get to me. It's only a real issue when it impedes understanding and communication.

Some of my common peeves (dominate/dominant are my top ones) are the "mute/moot" "choose/chose/choice" and "loose/lose"

Aieeee! Even journalists are getting dominate and dominant mixed up! This is from an AP reporter:

Many Sunni Arabs are considering taking part in the constitutional referendum after having boycotted the Jan. 30 national election ballot — a move that left the once- dominate community with few seats in a parliament dominated by Shiites and Kurds

Why didn't you reply to that particular post with WTF (and is WTF the officially proper response, better than ebonics?).
I'm trying to find my funny bone about this rant; I'll come back and say more when the laughter kicks in.. M

I try to look at the content more than the spelling, as said English is not the first language of many. Some also could have dyslexia and discrete/discreet/diskreet etc can all look the same to them. Spell check won't always help then.

As long as I can read a post I’m happy about things. If I’m not sure as the post may leave one to interpret the main thrust, I will post asking for clarification. Mostly I write in word and after correcting any errors, I cut and paste. But then I’m a two-finger typist and need to watch the keyboard anyway. (Truthfully, I have large hands and naturally large fingers << All the better to explore you with my dear>> and often-hit two or even three keys if I am speed (for me) typing.). What does amuse me is the number of US based folk who constantly correct me with the spelling or certain words. I have fun and some gentle leg pulling explaining to them that I set my spell checker to “English Australian”. I inform that they don’t write English but American and I write in Australian….. My real doozies happen when I'm to tired and my dyslexia has cut in and I post direct to the box thingie and not in word.

i used "search" and came up with 8 threads on this subject:

http://www.collarchat.com/searchpro.asp?phrase=spell&author=&forumid=ALL&topicreply=topic&message=subject&timeframe=%3E&timefilter=0&language=single&top=300&criteria=AND&submitbutton=+OK+

i have repeatedly said it is communication that matters -- typonese, acronyms, etc. are acceptable/fun/etc.

Anyone who elevates spelling and grammar over the author's ideas, whether in email or on the boards, has priorities which will likely leave them isolated with a copy of "Style" and a purely online life.

It should be obvious that people and their messages are more important/worth hearing than some diatribe on english grammar and spelling.

Talk about boring subjects. Is it just that the Op could think of nothing worth discussing?
