What do you think about gift cards?

KMsAngel -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 7:20:06 AM)

i'd PREFER that someone spent a bit of time thinking about what i would like and making that effort, but not everyone has the time, the imagination, or maybe the creativity. and sometimes when asked, i just can't think of what'd i'd like and they REALLY want to do something for me. gift card to favourite shop, bookshop, whathaveyou would be awesome gift then.

KatyLied -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 7:22:58 AM)

I like gift cards and Pink Floyd!

pahunkboy -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 7:25:20 AM)

I think a heartfelt handwritten letter is better.  Gift cards expire and have fees. It is yet something else to think about. GO with cash money.  I think the days of it being tacky are over.

Raechard -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 7:25:31 AM)

If I know someone likes to read books and I give them a book token it shows thought I think. I could go further and choose the book myself but that would only be about me trying to influence what they like rather than them going and getting a book they would like to read. Maybe though I should have some idea what they like to read. I suppose you could argue why not just give them money?

Say I give you £50 to buy something you can give me the £50 back for me to go and buy something. With gifts you can make a net profit so you have to be clever [8|]. For example I give you a gift worth £50 but you think it is worth £75 (based on last year’s events). Therefore you give me a gift worth £75 back and I make a net profit of £25. Yeah haaaa.[:D]

pahunkboy -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 7:26:57 AM)

well- no one is going to put a gift card or cash in a momentos box-

Raechard -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 7:33:19 AM)

I have to confess I don't know what a mementoes box is, did Pandora have one?

marieToo -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 7:40:06 AM)

I think gift cards rock, but it sort of depends who you are giving them to.  (If it's a highly personal relationship, it might seem a little cold to give them a gift card.)  But if it's a regular person, older kids, parents, friends, whatever, I think they're actually the perfect solution to the ole "what the fuck am I going to get for him/her?"  syndrome.

Nowadays (is that a word?) they have gift cards for EVERYthing.  I don't see anything wrong with giving someone a card for itunes or starbucks, their favorite restaurant, barnes and noble,  or whatever, as long as it's something you know they will use.

pahunkboy -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 7:47:03 AM)

a momentos box would be memories that you save in a box.

Raechard -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 8:08:07 AM)

You mean it's another word for a brain?[8|]

acissej -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 8:10:48 AM)

I'm with Marie.  I like gift cards, but it does kind of depend on who's giving or receiving them.  For example, if my husband gave me a gift card, I'd be disappointed with his lack of creativity.  To (or from) my office Secret Santa or a more casual acquaintance, a gift card is perfect.   Then, of course, there are always those people who should know you well enough to pick out something you like, but always get it horrifyingly wrong.  Someone should tell them to just get gift cards.

deeddlit -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 8:44:08 AM)

I am all good with gift cards...regardless of the relationship.  Fact is, some folks are hard to buy for and some folks are REALLY bad at the buying and then sometimes it is just plain less stressful ( I for one don't want anyone stressing over the perfect gift for me...there is far more than enough other stuff in this world that we do need to worry about).  Gift cards are perfect for them!!  I sure as hell don't like ( and no one else I know does either ) spending time in a line just to return something I will never use/is too big or small/is just plain hideous, I would rather have just gotten the $20 and bought something I love.

As far as momentos go...these things hold just as much cherished memory for me as anything I have ever recieved wrapped with a big fancy bow.  I buy and then I tell her what she got me...I take pictures so she can see and we sit and chit chat about how much I love it and she is so happy I was able to find exactly what I wanted.

Last year for dad it was money because we could not afford much, so it made more sence to us to let him pick out his gift.  This year we have the money and we got him the chess set we have been eyeing for him for a year now.  He collects them and we are totally jazzed we could get it.  Last year he bought a movie he has been wanting for years that I did not know about...again, I was so tickled when he told me thats what he got.  Either way, it all seems to work out in the end...at least in my experience anyway.

Happy gift/card giving folks!!

Something to think about...when my sister gives a gift card...she goes all out on the presentation...her presentation is like a work of art...just one of the reasons why I cherish her gifts so.

thornhappy -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 8:54:32 AM)

Greetings folks--

My tastes are just enough "off the wall" that my relatives have a hard time shopping for me.  So they generally go for bookstore gift cards, and I have a great time buying stuff that I'd normally wait for paperback.

My parents do a mix of gift cards and gifts, since they know my tastes fairly well.

Gift cards are great!  I love to receive them, especially to the local adult toy stores.  I don't want anyone picking out which toys they think I will want or need.

slaverosebeauty -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 9:39:47 AM)

I pulled my cousin's name for Christmas and that's basically all she asked for [gift cards to the mall, starbucks, borders, and a few other places], well :oP on her.  I am getting her a few things, then a small gift card for Jamba Juice wrapped in something else, if she doesn't find it, I will only be out $5.  She  is 18 or 19, so she is still into 'malls' and that sorta thing.  I LOVE giving her a reality check, its the thought that counts, NOT the amount; besides, I got my aunt in on it, and she gave me a few gift suggestions that were NOT gift cards.

MiladyElaine -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 11:37:18 AM)

Girt cards are nice but they are a way of copping out giving a well thought of present PLUS it tells the recepient how much you spent on them.  Sometimes this is a slap in the face.

Level -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 1:15:33 PM)

I appreciate all the answers!

I bought several cards today, for Tarjay, and iTunes, and am getting a couple to Applebees or another eatery tomorrow.

proudsub -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 3:10:51 PM)

I am giving a lot of gift cards this year since i can't get out to shop due to my surgery.  I've given up on picking out clothes for my daughters, they always return them all, so gift cards are a better bet.  I like to receive gift cards too, it's fun shopping for things i might not otherwise buy for myself.  I like restaurant cards too, we eat out a lot.[:)]

missturbation -> RE: Gift cards (12/8/2007 3:31:59 PM)

I've never given one, but have recieved them.
I think they show a lack of creativity to be honest.
Although saying that if they were for manola blahnik or jimmy choo id be pretty god damn happy.
