MissOchistic -> Dragon Tail Whip, end fraying (12/8/2007 7:53:44 AM)

Hey,

I've been enjoying learning to use a new purchase, a "dragon tail whip" (though I'm not sure if that's a universal name or if it might be called something else). I can't find much information online about it other than this: http://www.swtchr2.com/dragon.htm , which doesn't offer much in the way of care. I've found a ton of great single-tail info sites, but none mention this type.
What I have found is that fairly quickly the end will begin to fray, and it's already very lightly happening. So I'm trying to figure out a way to prevent that, preferably without adding a tip on (because I don't want the thin cut-welts those leave on flesh; I use it on people like a snapped towel). I thought about using some sort of sealant, but not being very familiar with single tails, I'm not sure if this will effect the showy crack (oh, yes, it breaks the barrier and I love it >:)) or balance of it.
Anyone have any ideas? Any other info about this whip Is hould know is appreciated, too ^.^

Miss O i sell that particular item , i have had one i use as a demo model for 4 years now  ans i have used a razor blade and  slightly trimmed the end  of mine  and its still going strong .I do not know what material  nor who made yours . I have seen some   very cheap ones  and some  inbetweens and  some made for life .I have 3 in my personal colletion and 2 snakes tongues aswell , some made of  bison  are my fav .If you have one  similar to the ones i sell , they are  very long  and can be folded in 1/2  for a whappy thuddy effect , they can be used in take down type move's , a gag  from behind also . Yes you can use it as a very effective single tail  and can be popped , snapped , or stripped .Its a very versital  tool !
As far as a sealant or protectant , i would have to know what its made of , suede ?deer?bison ?graded leather ? etc ..

Just got a very nice, brand new Dragon Tongue whip.  (I've heard them called Dragon Tails, too).  I'll keep an eye out for fraying, but the tool will probably mellow with age and thus become more...stimulating as it frays. Perhaps?  I am hoping.

i call the larger ones Dragons Tails  the medium sizes Dragon tongues  and the smalls are snakes Tongues .I have found the suedes need to be trimmed from time to time  after  some use , the other hides  like bison , and  graded leathers  , elk , etc held up much better .I know  they are also stiffer and  mark much better too .

We also make these Dragon Tails - and my Master has had the same one for about 5 years now - with no fraying of the ends at all.
i would suggest that perhaps the leather is soft, or not of good quality, or also if the angle is wrong in the initial cutting out, then it won't be properly balanced and that may cause the leather to fray with use.

That *&#&^$&  thing is wicked!   Got it tried out on me tonight and I'm still crying over the welts  [sm=river.gif]
It's wicked, I tell ya....WICKED.   Took some pics, too.

But why do I like it so much?  If it weren't for the 'sound' of it when it cracks across the skin, I would guess I was actually being cut with a dull blade.

So how much use do you get out of one of these "Demons" before the ends start to fray?

(I still can't believe that I actually requested this implement of torture TWICE today)

I got one of mine from Panther Prowls and it was made from a lightweight chap/garment leather. Mine held up to at least 20 minutes of nearly daily use for about a year before it was stolen. I broke lightswitch plates with it working on my accuracy. Flipping the switches on and off. Every now and again I'd need to trim the tip but nothing a sharp pair of scissors or a small rotary blade couldn't solve. Hopefully Panther will be at Lady Thorns Flea tomorrow and I can get me a new one.

Urg, I don't remember what type of leather it is. It's bought from a private-owned little shop at the end of my alley, and he told me, but I forgot.  >.< I know it's topgrain leather, and that it's very, very soft...if I had to guess from comparison I'd say deer.

Ah, okay then....seems like fraying really isn't that big of a deal outside of aesthetics then. Now i'm less worried, as this is probably my favorite toy played with ever.

chellekitty -> RE: Dragon Tail Whip, end fraying (12/9/2007 5:44:00 PM)

it could be due to the weight of the leather or if it was cut against the grain rather than with the grain, or with the grain rather than against the grain (whatever is the wrong way to do it, i am not a toy maker, so i am not sure)....but don't put any sealant on it!! for now, trim the frayed parts with a sharp razor, keeping the angle the same, and to prevent further fraying, depending on what kind of leather or suede it is, condition it, and condition it on a regular basis....with what i am not sure... Elegant would be your woman to ask for what to condition it with...but you need to be sure what kind of leather or suede it is first....

good luck
chelle

I just checked with Panther who made my mini-tail and he said his are actually a thicker suede material. He did say that for him any thicker weight would not "snap" as well. If both sides have a grain or nap, it is most likely suede, if one side is smooth you can condition it with something like Aussie Leather conditioner. Available at any Tandy Leather Store and some Michael's stores too. If it's suede a simple dry or damp toothbrush will work.

DO NOT SEAL THE END!!! Pretty much any sealant you use could potentially hurt a bottom more than help.

Like I said before my mini-tail had lasted me a year and I spent 20 minutes a day or every other day for nearly a year and I trimmed mine ever so slightly monthly. There are some people who prefer to leave the fraying on as it decreases the bite a little bit. At times I'd leave the fray until it literally was so weak it snapped off on it's own.

I love my dragontails. I also have a set of twin dragonettes that I florentine with. Excellent quality. I use them often and they hold up well. Mine were made by Lifestyle Leather & Wood in the Atlanta area. They also do custom work and they are my favorite leather toymakers, not having found any other's that I like as much.
