Throughout Iraq, many women wear a headscarf and others wear a full face veil although secular women are often unveiled. Since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and the rise of a Shiite-dominated government, armed men in some parts of the country have sometimes forced women to cover their heads or face punishment. In some areas of the heavily Shiite south, even Christian women have been forced to wear headscarves.

Before the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, Basra, Iraq's second-largest city, was known for its mixed population and night life. Now, in some areas, red graffiti threatens any woman who wears makeup and appears with her hair uncovered: "Your makeup and your decision to forgo the headscarf will bring you death."

I thought we were spreading freedom, over there......

This is not the freedom that we should be spreading.

An inevitable result of the ignorant and unsophisticated approach in Iraq of the Loyal Bushies.

When Iraq devolved from a nation run by a cruel, heartless bastard into 18 separate nations ruled by 18 cruel, heartless bastards, you're going to get differing ideas on what's the "right" way to run your own little province.

In this instance, the Religious Fundies have taken complete control, and women are once again property.

Which *should* be right in line with the Loyal Bushies own Religious Fundamentalist Hysteria.

Now, now, boys, that's their "culture" over there!
Don't you want to be good little "Multi-Cultural" soldiers?

I've been saying it for about 2 years now.   Iraq is our Afghanistan.  All these comparisons to Vietnam really aren't accurate.

The Russian's invaded Afghanistan and try to set up a government friendly to them, but were undermined by U.S. and Brittish intelligence operations.   We are being undermined by Syrian and Iranian intelligence operations.

The Russians were using traditional combat troops in an effort to fight a non-conventional enemy on an asymetrical battlefield.   We are faced with the same.

The insurgent factions in Afghanistan were theocratically aligned just as they are in Iraq.

It's a LOT easier to destroy and undermine a government than to build one.

A prime example of the "progress" we are making over there.  I wonder when the US govt. will ever get it through their heads that we can't force our views and values on others?  Oh I forgot, its about the oil.

All the more reason to stay engaged in the Middle East if you ask me. We can be a force for good there, in many ways - but not if we bury our heads in the sand.

Sanity, I'd like to see our government "be a force for good" in the U.S. for a change like they're supposed to be doing.
That "being a force for good" in foreign countries is one of the main reasons that we're in debt to the tune of $9Trillion!

Those pesky terrorist infestations are kind of spendy too though, popeye. And you know what they say about an ounce of prevention, don't you?

How the fuck can people without the Honor, Integrity, and Ethics to NOT TORTURE PRISONERS in direct violation of their sworn oaths, claim to be "Good" in any shape or form?

There are no "terrorist infestations" which require US Action. Bush let the Saudi 9/11 financiers and planners get away before he cut-and-ran from our bases in Saudi Arabia.

There is nothing on US Soil which The People can't handle, once they stop listening to the dumb shit the Government tells them to do like the folks on Flight 93 did, when they ignored the US Government's rule of "Co-operate with Hijackers"

Now, are you suggesting that since Bush, and his supporters were so stupid, naive, and unsophisticated that they invaded Iraq without understanding the consequences and CREATED the problem we have today, why should the US Taxpayer pay to clean up the Loyal Bushies mess without making the bitches apologize for fucking shit up so bad at a minimum, and serve prison time?

Maybe Bush should have been a force of good in DC first, and PROVEN HIS ABILITY before going and playing with the big boys?

popeye1250 -> RE: Vigilantes kill 40 women in Iraq's south (12/10/2007 10:20:52 AM)

Yup, that didn't make sense at all.
We knew Bin laden was in Afganistan or Pakistan so,..............................................................let's invade Iraq!
We know he's in Pakistan now but there's no troops there!
But, we do have Troops in Somalia!
Fuckin shithole Somalia!
Dollars to donuts Somalia is lining up at the "Foreign Aid" trough too!
I don't want to "help" those people!
They NEED to starve!

Yeah, lets blame America and American soldiers because Islam is a backwards religion....

Yeah, that makes sense.
