thornhappy -> For serious graphics/gaming geeks.... (12/11/2007 5:18:29 PM)

Greetings all--

I'm hoping to enjoy playing Oblivion at Christmas, and proceeded to upgrade my video card (nVidia GeForce 5500 to GeForce 7600) and my RAM (500Mb to 1.5Gb, PC3200).  I did this to meet some of the requirements of Oblivion - previously I played Morrowind without much trouble by turning down the settings, but Oblivion has some tougher requirements.

However, now that I have this spanky new card, Media Player (10.0 or that miserable 11.0) won't work - and neither will RealPlayer.  In Media Player, the screen goes black and the app freezes.  In RealPlayer,  the video appears to start, but then freezes.

So I researched this and there aren't many fixes about.  Have a call into tech support and am waiting for a call back (this is what they call live tech support.)

I'm running WinXP home edition with all the updates, an AthlonXP 3000+, and the motherboard's 2 years old (BioStar) running with an nVidia chip set.  Makes for some excitement when you try to uninstall nVidia components.

Have any of y'all run into this?  If so, what did it take to bring it back?

Now here's where we could use a thread-pulling tool....

Fixed it by installing the AGP to PCI bridge driver.  I'd previously trashed it while trying to uninstall the 5500 drivers (the card and the motherboard come up as "nVidia drivers", so it's potluck when you select one).  I used the Microsoft search for a new one, and it hosed it.

So I dug up the driver and used the Device Manager to swap it out.  Hope not to have to do that again anytime soon.  Now the media players work and there's porn to be had.

All in all, this was a goat rope of the first water.

Thanks to kisshou for some additional advice!
