if there was one 'definitive' piece of reading material that you could recommend to a curious newbie (in terms of experience) subbie, what would it be? i know that no one piece will be the be all and end all but what written text has touched you the most, made you sit up and go 'ah yes'?

My favorite introduction to BDSM is "Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns" by Philip Miller and Molly Devon. They present many aspects of BDSM from both the submisive and the dominant perspective, and do so with a sense of humor that I found very refreshing.

"The Story of O" is THE classic on the subject.

I can't answer the question unless you narrow it down to a topic. Overall BDSM hotness, BDSM how-to, relationship dynamics, Master/slave psychology or spiritual growth in your chosen role.

My books are more into catergories because some are erotica some are learning tools and some are just fun. One isn't BDSM in particular but is the strongest book I have read about power exchange in my life.  That book would be Written On The Body by Jeanette Winterson.

So here's my list
Hand In The Bush- Deborah Addington
Leathersex, Leathersex 2 and Leathersex Q&A by Joseph Bean (Q&A edited from Drummer magazine)
To Love, To Obey and To Serve- vi johnson
The Leather Daddy and The Femme- Carol Queen
Mr Benson- John Preston
The Real Thing- William Carney
Urban Aboriginals- Geoff Mains
Screw The Roses, Send Me The ThornsPhilip Miller and Molly Devon
The Ethical Slut by Lady Green and Dossie Eaton
SM 101 (I have mixed opinions about it but it has some good parts)- Jay Wiseman
On The Safe Edge- Trevor Jacques
Learning The Ropes- Race Bannon
The Ties That Bind- Guy Baldwin
Macho Sluts- Pat(rick) Califa
Doing It For Daddy- Pat(rick) Califia and The Second Coming edited by Pat(rick) Calfia and Robin Sweeny (hi Robin!)
The Loving Dominant by John Warren was one of the first non fiction BDSM relationship based books I read around 95 or 96 and it helped me want to explore deeper so I recommend that as well.
for bigger people into S&M, there's a couple of great chapeters on Fat BDSM in Big Big Love by Hanne Blank but I'm bias.

Edited for content.

Master and i have found "Slavecraft" to be very useful in terms of the psychological aspects of slavery. Depends on what you're seeking though.

I have found The MarketPlace Series by Laura Antoniou. http://www.lantoniou.com/     To me they are a bit more realistic than most of the books Ive read.

I really could not recommend anything; I have never read a 'lifestyle/BDSM/D/s/M/s book in my life; with the exception of the Gor series in highschool ( and that was for a different reason  )

For a newbie? Definitely "Screw the Roses..." Since there isn't a "BDSM for Dummies" then this has to be the closest thing to it... Where you go from there, would depend more on your specific interests, I think.

Wow, I am in the minority for hating that Screw the Roses book!  For me, it's the print equivalent of CastleRealm!  But, there is MUCH good in it, especially as far as play goes.

For relationship dynamics, the gay leather books have been the most useful to me.  DaddyZ's list is great. :)

What I liked about "Screw" was the humor.  I read it right after I got active on the net and it's portrayal of people on the net at the time was right on the money to me and I enjoyed it for that.

I forgot to mention The Leatherman's Handbook and Leatherman's Handbook 2 by Larry Townsend. I have a second edition.  This is more of a sentimental book for me because it really show the history of leather in the early 70s a walk through time.

The first girl I actually had a M/s relationship with had one of the first printings of Different Loving by Brame, Brame and Jacobs.  The book was sentimental to her because it motivated her to explore more, though we weren't major fans of the book while realizing many people are.

Many of my friends call me a Big Ole Lesbian because I prefer queer erotica.  I am one of the few men who admit to subscribing to On Our Backs magazine for the pictures and the erotica!  I wish that it was still in print. Same with FaT GirL

The one I miss is Lisa Palac's "Future Sex." For a couple years there, it actually looked like someone was moving the skin mag past the picture perfect models and stereo reviews into getting some quality information, and lit about sex itself out to the general public.

Naturally, it failed.

I'll second the request for books recommendations actually. So far I've been going off of instincts and my own experience, but if there are any decent books out there that are good reads on top of being useful or interesting, I'd be curious!

I agree with Knowledge is power  the more you know the better.

I suggest read read read even fiction books ( I loved the Market place series)  But please remember there is no "true way" no set rules . It's what works best for you and the ones involved in your relationship. I say this because when i was first trying to discover myself and gain knowledge i looked for the "true way and rules" and got many different opinions, set of rules and was even told many times how unsubmissive I really was.

Hope this helps at least a little.
