Offhand I'd say it's because it usually involves people having food, I believe it's a contraction of "meeting" and "lunch."

Bingo! The first munch (in April, 1992 IIRC) was announced by STella in a post to the newsgroup alt.sex.bondage. She called it a burgermunch because the first one was held at a hamburger take-out place named Kirk's in Palo Alto. The rest is history. ~stef

Lexicologists! Ahh now having read the posts I have it figured out. Lexicologist = Word Mechanic.. Ahah! And here’s me thing that a lexicologist was a left handed proctologist..

Hmmm ... I'm not questioning this, since I don't know the answer, but I remember that a Boston BBS called Argus (now defunct, like all BBS's) had something very much like munches even before that. Argus used to meet every once in a while in the food court of that mall in Cambridge--I forget what it's called. (Maybe it's Cambridgeside? Haven't been back to Boston in a while.)
