I recently purchased a standard leather collar for my sub from a pet store (all the stuff I could find for people was of the "really thick" or "spiky" variety...too gaudy) and she loves it, but her neck is developing a redness where she's in contact with the collar. I'm not sure whether the leather is too rough or it's heat rash, so I was wondering if you folks had any suggestions for making her collar more comfortable.

If its the rough leather split side contacting the skin, you can get some nice quality garmet leather scrap from Tandy or a craft or clothing store and glue it inside your collar with contact cement.  This will give you a smooth lining against the skin. 

Its also possible its the heat or even alergic to the dye in the leather, etc. 

You may also consider a higher quality leather lined collar, or collars in latex, PVC, plastic, metal, vegan leather, etc.  Expamenting can be fun sometimes and you might end up with a collection of really nice collars out of it.

Dear mistermaster111, Ladies and Gentlemen;
 
For one, any collar from a pet store is something to be careful of, as far as leather and or nylon might be treated with chemicals.  "Made in China" there are health issues cropping up on a daily basis.
 
The leather, the plastics and or anything that contacts her skin might be causing the rash.  Leather is made from a chemical process to which can cause some rashes.  Nylon may also hold properties that causes rashes, especially if sensitive to latex, nylon and or rubber.
 
It can be experimented with a tube of material which creates a barrier to see if that helps.  Sometimes it is lack of air, which causes this rash -- heat rash.
 
Might want to go with a metal based collar and see if it happens still.

Well, damn my post didn't go through.

I've had the same problem. It happens because she's sweating under her collar and the sweat is drying leaving her skin sticky which is partially sticking to the collar. She's getting a mild friction burn.

heres a few ways to deal with it

Oil the hell out of the collar. Mink oil works wonders.

apply baby oil or the like to her skin before putting the collar on.

or

lightly dust the inside of the collar with baby powder.

If you have a problem with a red and irrated neck never fear. Take your sub, tie her down, remove the collar and dust her neck with a medicated powder. It will burn like hell and is quite fun to watch.
