I used to do wood burning as a child with the modified soldering iron, and as was pointed out, it is ridiculously slow.
Another approach is to buy differently shaped metal tools, or twist welding rods into different shapes, heat them up in a fire, and burn the designs into the wood. When I built my first wood fish tank I bought a propane torch with different jets and used that to lightly carbonize the top layer of wood.
The end result tends to be quite stunning if you take the time to make it happen.
