Interesting article in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette today...

14 states across the US have notified the federal government that they are no longer requesting federal funding for "abstinence only" sex education programs. Two other states have said they will accept the funding, but only if they are allowed to re-direct the funding into comprehensive sex education programs. These programs would teach the use of condoms and other contraceptives.

This means that they are giving up on $15 million out of a possible $50 million available for such programs. The federal government's response to this clear message that the "abstinence only ed" is a total failure: up the available funding for the failing program to $240 million!

Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood said, "These abstenince only programs just aren't getting the job done. They are idealogically based programs that don't have any support in the scientific facts."

I don't know about you guys, but this really pisses me off! Here's all this evidence saying that preventing teen pregnancy via preaching at them doesn't work, yet they stick to it like Ahab to Moby Dick because the religious right refuses to wake up to reality.

Just another example of how America has it's head up it's ass.

California was ahead of this power curve.  We opted out back in 2000 (because we already knew it didnt work) before anybody else.

Dont trash all Americans as having our heads up our asses, some of us didnt vote for the cretins who thought this up and are promoting this program.

bipolarbear:    luna absolutely despises the abstenance only laws.  her 6 year old um can tell you exactly how a baby is made but a 15 year old boy in a public school can't be taught by a trained adult how to prevent it until he's ready to take care of it?  These laws are being lobbied by the same people who think that throwing 15 year olds in jail for having sex with each other is going to "cure the sex before marriage" problem.  (yes in some southern states sex with a minor is illegal - so if they catch two 15 year olds having sex, both of them can go to jail for sex crimes against a minor)  wonderful examples of what happens when church and state can't get their finger's out of each other's butts.

Sorry if luna got passionate about that - but one thing luna actually liked about Clinton (and honestly there weren't many) was that his sex education got the teen pregnancy rate WAY down and then the Bush Dictatorship changed the laws in the name of "morality" and nearly doubled the number. My brother actually made a comment that luna wasn't sure she agreed with last week but after thinking about it   . . . well you decide:  "They keep calling this war {Iraq} our children's children's war.  I wonder if the abstinence movement is just an agenda.  Get our teen aged kids pregnant and 18 years from now our Dictatorship will have plenty of bodies for the War Movement"  Not to mention all those 17-18 year old dads signing up for the military right nwo because the government will take care of little 17 year old sally and her new baby while daddy's in another country dying.  you get a good 3 -10 years out of dad while waiting for junior to grow up."  At first I thought maybe he was paranoid.  Then again - with this administration - who knows whats going to come out of the mouth or mind of this Reigning Idiot?

Sinergy:  if naturalized citizens could be president then Governor Arnold could change his name to President Arnold and maybe the rest of the country would be as lucky as California.  California has been ahead of the curve for a while  . . . isn't it apparent that the gvt is afraid you guys are getting it right???  why else would they be so militant (and federally militarized) about the State's Rights to Govern/legal weed battle?  Sorry - luna didn't mean to get onto a rant on that either - she wishes she could afford to live out there!

The Christian Right Wing may preach abstinence and yes teenage pregnancy has diminished.

And.... oral and anal sex between teenagers is way up. But at least the CRW are happy...

diaperboy, that's just the point... since the abstenince only ed program was put in place, teen pregnancy hasn't diminished... it's now DOUBLE what it was during the Clinton era.
The CRW is preaching this drek... and the kids are paying the price.

Luna, sometimes I wonder about that idea too... the GOP is a fundamentally warlike party. They thrive on armed conflict as a way of "solving" problems. It puts money in the pockets of the defense contractors back home, and keeps the unemployment problem at bay. (Controlling your population growth through sex education would do that too!) It also makes sense that they want to generate enough cannon fodder now to supply whatever war they may be planning, the next time they sleeze their way back into the white house.

Sinergy, I wasn't slamming all Americans... just America itself. Only 8 to 10% show up to vote, so we allow this kind of religious whacko thinking to take root. Abstinence only sex ed, creationsim, book banning in school libraries, bans on stem cell research, "ex-gay" torture and brainwashing programs, persecution of GLBT folk in general, the resistence to to an Equal Rights Ammendment for women, "Preemptive Wars"... Take your pick. All of these things are CRW/GOP creations. None of them work. All of them hold us back from making progress on the real problems we're facing as a nation. And the American majority (most polls show 80% of the American voting population is moderate/centrist) allows it all to happen by being so apathetic.

Like I said... head up it's ass.

Bipolar, I totally agree!
This is a *total waste* of the Taxpayers money!
Just more beauracracy that never works!
And I'm sure that the paper shufflers in Washington have reams of "rules and regulations" involved with this too.
One thing is for sure, the American People need to have a lot more *control* over *our* government!
They keep comming out with more laws and regulations only there's noone out here to *actually enforce them!*
I think that's called a "paper tiger."
That guy "Huckabible" must love this shit!
