I think you might have gone to a different thread than the one(s) I specifically had in mind, Kalista.

Rich, its all about free speech. I dont like being mean or seeing offensive comments, sometimes i say something when i see one. i really didnt see anywhere where You were being spiteful, just stating your opinions, and righly so. The thing with strong opinions, is they elicit strong responces, this can be how the problems start.
i try not to be mean, yet still speak my mind, and when a thread is done its done, because i disagree on one topic i try not to let it carry over to others. Yanno what though, none of us are perfect and we all get it wrong at times.

Is it more important to be nice than to apply a bit of thought?

A combination of the two is always good for starters, but then you have to draw you own conclusions and moderate your own responses in your own way.

Unless something really annoys me at first, I try to be hepful in a nice way. If the drama continues after my spending time trying to understand and offer advice that was asked for, I'm a little less nice. If it turns out that the person who asked for advice is just an attention pig, I turn my back on it and think twice before I get involved again in the endless pig-feeding cycle.

i will not feed you a line of bullshit just to save your feelings if you ask for an opinion....but i try not to give my opinion if it is not asked for unless it is going to be something i see as helpful to others...now, i also try to apply logic in my reasoning which is where the "alienate multitudes" comes in, people don't like logic, because it often contradicts what they say...but i do it anyway....

at the same time, if i recognize that someone is flat out not able to see logic and reason, there is no amount of brow beating that i can do to make them see it, so there is no point in me giving my opinion - nice, mean, happy, angry or cheerful with balloons....
