Vocabulary question - 12/17/2007 6:54:07 PM

So, I went to a munch here locally recently, and someone asked me so, what do I like? And I explained, and everyone nodded and said "Oh, you're a sammie." (sammy? not sure.)

So, uh, what the heck is a sammie?

I'm relatively certain I'm not a sandwich, which was my first thought. Any help with definitions here?

It is not a compliment.
smart ass maso, likes to manipulate in order to get sensation (punishment).  Someone who knows more about sado-maso can probably do a better job at explaining it

Well, they sure didn't look like they were saying something bad about me, and wow, is that pretty accurate, too. So I think I'll take it as a compliment.

Because it was the first munch I'd ever been to and I was pretty nervous. But now I know!

I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing.(Notice my nic)

Yes, a SAM is a smart ass masochist, but if done in a playful and respectful manner, can be a lot of fun.

Some Dom/mmes have zero tolerance for this kind of behavior and they are the ones that you will not make a good sub to. But there are plenty that love it.

If this is part of your personality, then be yourself and enjoy. Just remember that you never NEED to act out to get your needs met. It's ok to ask to have them met.

They probably meant it in a humorous, light hearted way.  I don't think they were trying to insult you.

I'm a SAM and it is not an insult. There is a big difference between being a SAM and being a brat. My Sir likes that I have a mind and a mouth and that I know how to use them, but trust me I have never been a SAM so that I could manipulate him into doing anything he didn't want to do. Hell, if I even tried that he would do the exact opposite. I wonder if that makes him a SAS (Smart Ass Sadist)?

Here in the Twin Cities, being a sam is a good thing. It was a compliment. It's so fuckin' cold here, any excuse to get your ass warmed is a good one. :)  Welcome to the forums.

It can be an insult, though it totally depends on who is saying it to you....i used to be a SAM before meeting my Daddy and thought i would always be that way and that it was part and parcel of who i am.

If my Daddy were to say it, it would sooo not be a good thing....he doesn't have the patience for someone who wants to top from the bottom in that way or who tries all the time to prove how they aren't submissive by acting out like that. (the way he looks at it)

Somehow he has managed to not allow that part of me to come out in the light....i think because it was clear from the onset that he wouldn't tolerate it, so trying to manipulate would be pointless...Also, knowing that he doesn't like it, and how i respect him, i just never attempted to push him like that.

Others though might allow that in me, because i am not totally submitting to them in the same way (S LOL) i don't mean it, it just kinda happens.

It can mean that, but not necessarily, some people are proudly sams. The person who runs the group local to me owns a sam. There is room for every one.

I would point out that perhaps it is not a good thing for anyone to label you as anything before you get acquainted with what all the terms mean... it says volumes about those labeling you that they would do so before they even informed you what they meant... seeing that they knew that you are new.

Personally I'm a brat, not a sam, simply because I'm neither a masochist nor do I act inappropriately to provoke him. I brat to amuse him and to indicate when I'm feeling up to rougher play.

And although many doms aren't compatible with brats or sams, so what. That just means you don't have to weed through them to find someone you are compatible with.

Actually it can be a compliment.  I am a SAM and proud of it.  I don't manipulate in order to get sensation.  I don't act up on purpose to get punishment.  I am a playful brat that likes to joke around.  Sometimes I get a swat on the ass, to which I reply  "Oh yes, that's the spot!"  Or if threatened with "You're gonna get it", I'll usually laugh and say "Go ahead, threaten...er...promise me again."  I am comfortable enough in my relationship to be able to joke around, knowing my playfulness and brattiness is taken just the way it is intended...lighthearted fun.   I once showed up for a session with a tin pie plate taped to my ass and a "No Spanking Zone" sign on it.  He laughed uproariously....as he was reddening said ass.   I am SAM, SAM I am, I like green eggs and ham.

I find it impressive with a seasoned kinkster keeps from literally drooling when a newbie with an attentive ear comes around- forget about resisting the urge to "learn them some stuff."

I'm definitely new to this group, and new to community in general. But not new to bdsm. I've been playing with various partners, on and off (okay, okay, a nine year vanilla relationship in the middle there) since I was 18. So I definitely know what I do and don't like already.

Is there a single thread that covers many of these stereotypes in a neat little package?
