Dear collarsubkitty, Ladies and Gentlemen;
I am an equestrian as well as I drive horses.
In horse/pony/cob/draft circles; there are certain differences between a whip and a crop.
A crop usually has a flap, a tab, a cut out hand, butterfly shape and or something that would 'slap' and move the horse forward.
A whip, is usually with a narrow cracker/popper, much like one will find on a single tail. Some are nylon, some are thread, some are horse hair and some are Kevalar.
A bat, is usually much smaller version of a crop. It is designed for children and used on ponies.
Length of the shaft of the whip also has importance, as well as gains flexibility the longer it is. The equestrian whip is to the length as to touch behind the rider's leg, hindquarters and aids the rider in moving a horse forward. A saddlebred/five gated/three gated/Park horse whip is slightly longer but, not by much and shorter than a Dressage whip. A Dressage whip is long as to permit the rider to keep their hands before them and reach back and touch the hocks or back of the leg, to drive a horse 'under' and tuck and propell themselves forward.' The handle of a Dressage whip usually has a upside down 'top hat' as to keep it from falling through the hands. A Whisk, is a whip which looks similiar to a whip however, the end is created from a horse's tail. A Cart Whip is thicker diameter but, same length as a Dressage whip. A Buggy whip is as long as a Cart Whip and 1/2 more length. The Carriage Whip is again slightly longer than a Buggy whip and a Coaching whip is same length as a lounging whip--where an equestrian stands on the ground and has a horse go in circles and the whip keeps the horse 'out' and not drift in as well as give signals to the horse.
BDSM Whips are usually regular horse crops and riding whips with garnishes to make it look showy. Glitter, glitter dust and such--designed for Adult stores.
Flexibility depends on length as well as the whip's core. Most modern riding whips are made of nylon and older whips that went out of style in my earlier riding days in the 1960s were made of bone and rigid, the shaft was either exposed or covered in leather.
